About the Author

Martyn Burke knows war-riddled Afghanistan, where he has filmed documentaries. He knows Los Angeles, where he lives and works. And he knows about terrorist families based in multicultural Toronto, his second home. In 2012, his feature documentary Under Fire: Journalists in Combat won a Peabody and he was short-listed for an Academy Award. In 2015, Martyn received the Auteur Award from the International Press Academy. Previous recipients include Guillermo del Toro, Baz Luhrmann, and George Clooney.

A funny, poignant take on complex themes

If you like a novel to have breadth as well as depth, Burke's has that and more. From the Venice beach boardwalk to the mountains of Afghanistan, the author's keen eye for the telling detail enlivens a tale that has insights to share on both the survival strategy of a 101st Airborne's sniper to the oddball joys of Liberace's piano pyrotechnics. Psychics and terrorists, Canadians and Kandahar - the most unlikely of juxtapositions combust in this wild ride of a read, which explores the miseries and mysteries of the human heart in a uniquely entertaining way.

I so enjoyed the interweaving story-line of Burke's prior novel, The Truth About The Night. Music for Love or War has the similar seamless structure that Burke does effortlessly. Two guys on sniper duty, on the look-out for Taliban in Pakistan, are propelled through their tour by a common bond of wanting to meet with a Hollywood seer, in the hopes that she will steer them to their lost loves. From mid-east hostile terrain to the glitz, glamour and sleaze of Hollywood, to the solidly safe city of Toronto, a lot of visual ground is covered delightfully. The two snipers have differing backgrounds. The women they love come from different places and cultures. Wry humor and a story about finding the person you love, are wrapped in magnificent prose in this book that's hard to put down.
