i don't see what the point was of releasing an instrumental version of this cd and selling it for full price. it seems like a cheap attempt to make a few extra bucks to me. i've seen for example where bands made an instrumental version of a cd and included it as a bonus, but to sell it separately and at full price? lame.
i'm even more aggravated because i didn't even KNOW there was an instrumental version. i knew this was a cd that mike patton had done vocals on, and i am a huge mike patton fan, so i purchased this. again, i had no idea i was buying an instrumental version... the cover looks EXACTLY the same except in the lower left bottom the small cursive writing says "instrumental version" instead of "featuring mike patton". again, how would most people even KNOW that there was an instrumental version that they had to be on the lookout for? instead, for some reason, this version was the first thing that popped up when i searched for this (after previously reading about it), so i bought it, and i feel like i've been duped now. the only reason i even bought this cd was to hear mike patton. the music is not terrible and has some good grooves, but without vocals it is very repetitive and boring. i'm so annoyed.

So what if it's the instrumental version like some have been complaining about (which you knew you were getting anyway)? It's a great set to listen to for whatever reason. I thought they should have made an instrumental version b/c the music was so good on it's own and I'm happy they did.

I've played this CD for literally thousands of Chicago area high school kids over the years. Of all the music I play in my classroom, this gets the best response. The first time a class hears it, inevitably the 2 or 3 most interesting kids in the room ask who it is. No matter whether they're going to Yale next year, or going to junior college, whether they grew up on hip-hop or metal, whether they're white, black, or latino -- IT DOESN'T MATTER. The music hounds are ALWAYS interested in this disc. The version with the guy on the cover (the one WITH vocals) isn't NEARLY as good. This is great music for when people are just showing up at your party, for studying, for reading the New York Times, or of course, for making love to your old lady. Buy it for yourself, or buy it for someone cooler than you who thinks you're a square. Abjure disappointment. Trust me.

I have to admit that when I first reveived this album I wasn't immediately in love with the Lovage. It's not sexy in the style of Maxwell or other soulful pimps (not that it's supposed to be!) but rather it's more of a raunchy/dirty sound with loops.
After listening to this for a while though it's become one of my favorite albums (the true measure of a good record ... gets better with time and not tired!). I have some of Jennifer Charles' Elysium Fields stuff but I haven't heard her sound as good as she does on this record ... this sultry/sexy genre is definitely her cup of tea. There are 6 songs on this album that I really love (Pit Stop/Thief/Strangers/Anger Management/Stroker Ace/Lifeboat) ... how many records can I say that about? Not many. At first my big complaint was that I wanted a lot more of Charles and a lot less of Patton ... but I've even come to like his parts a lot more as well. Like I said, it really grows on you.

Buy it now. Don't argue. Mike Patton on a 70's-style Get-Your-Groove-On mellow jam. This album kicks... Some Patton fans may find this one to be a little too mellow or "straight" compared to Disco Volante or Pranzo. Other's who appreciate Patton's incredible range might get into it more. Jennifer Charles has a haunting lilting voice that almost gives me gooseflesh. Also, I suspect few Patton/Bungle fans will recognized the cover of the 1982 Berlin song "Sex, I'm A..." If you can find it, a comparison of the two versions is rather comical.

I own both the original and the instrumental version and as good as the original is, I prefer the instrumental version. I don't know much about Dan the Automator but i do know that I enjoyed this way more than I expected to. This turned me on to Handsome Boy Modeling School which I also enjoyed.

Quand la musique est bonne
Reviewed in France on February 6, 2004Verified Purchase
"Barry White is the word" peut-on entendre pour commencer.
