Editorial Reviews

The highly anticipated album features stars Katharine McPhee (Karen), Megan Hilty (Ivy Lynn) and other cast members performing the original music created for the show s narrative and for the musical-within-a-musical. Highlighted on the album are the Broadway-caliber songs written for the series by Tony and Grammy winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. The "Smash" also includes some of the pop tunes that have been adapted for the show, such as Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful", the show-stopping song that Karen sings so effectively for her audition that she is plucked, literally, from obscurity to audition for the musical s starring role. Among the songs included on the soundtrack are the charming "Mr. and Mrs. Smith", sung by Hilty as the character of Marilyn and Will Chase performs as the actor playing her new husband, Joe DiMaggio. McPhee got pulses pounding when she was featured in a Super Bowl promo spot singing the sultry "Touch Me". And one of the season's most attention-getting songs has been the stunning "Let Me Be Your Star", seen in the pilot and sung simultaneously by Hilty and McPhee. In addition, Hilty's show-stopping performance of "Crazy Dreams" is also included on the soundtrack.

The songs contained on this CD are fantastic performances and a good introduction to the "Smash" TV show. But if you're expecting the entire oeuvre of the show, you'll have to look elsewhere.

If you go to Target, you can get a Deluxe CD with these 5 extra tracks:

- Breakaway
- Everything's Coming Up Roses
- Our Day Will Come
- Run
- September Song

And if you go to iTunes, you can get these 17 extra tracks (search for 'SMASH cast'):

- Call Me
- Cheers
- Dance to the Music
- Dig Deep
- Don't Forget Me
- Don't Say Yes Until I Finish Talking
- Grenade
- I Never Met a Wolf Who Didn't Love to Howl
- I'm Going Down
- It's a Man's Man's Man's World
- National Pastime, The
- Never Give All the Heart
- On Lexington & 52nd Street
- Redneck Woman
- Second Hand White Baby Grand
- Smash
- Song for You, A
- Thousand and One Nights, A

And as far as I can tell, you can only get the following songs via a lucky Google search:

- Another Op'nin, Another Show
- Arthur Miller Melody
- Happy Birthday, Mr. President
- Higher You Get the Farther the Fall, The
- I Wanna Be Loved by You
- Three on a Match

So have fun compiling your collection from all the various sources (and bitrates).

I was going to buy this on Amazon first thing this morning, but didn't have a chance before running out. Glad I didn't because on the way home I stopped off at Target and they had the Deluxe Edition with 5 extra songs. None of the 5 songs are available to purchase as a single on Amazon or Itunes. Songs are "September Song", "Our Day Will Come", "Everything's Coming Up Roses", "Breakaway" and "Run". It frustrates me when they do this, and I have to remind myself not to make an impulse buy before checking all outlets for the one with the exclusive, which one of them almost always does.

Hope this helps, sorry Amazon. I was already to purchase from you, but Target won out. Better luck next time.

In a perfect world, this show would have two soundtrack albums. One that was just the pop covers included in each episode, and one that was the original music written for the series. Unfortunately, we don't get that - we have a soundtrack that tries to include both but doesn't do either justice.

The track selection is just WEIRD. With the lone exception of "Stand", the standard version of the soundtrack completely ignores the last seven episodes of the series. Nick Jonas makes the soundtrack after appearing in one episode, with a Michael Buble cover that's okay but not all that interesting. And while the pop songs that are included are usually well done, what's the point in having Katharine McPhee or Megan Hilty perform covers that never stray too far from the original recordings?

The real issue, in my eyes, is that the soundtrack doesn't include enough of the original songs. The songs written for the show are smart, feature great performances, and are usually the highlight of each episode. This soundtrack only includes five of them. I am aware that *SOME* (but not all) of those are available on iTunes and Amazon, but I would have loved versions in higher quality than 256kbps MP3s.

The sad part is, there isn't really an excuse for the soundtrack to be this way. It's 42 minutes long - just over half of the disc's capacity. There really isn't an excuse for leaving off so much of the show's strongest material.

What IS included here is good, but this soundtrack could have been so much better. Instead of going with the Broadway songs written specifically for a show about a Broadway musical, the soundtrack is full of covers that aren't too far removed from Glee or American Idol.

I bought the deluxe version at target as soon as I could without looking at the list of songs on the back. When I got home, I was really disappointed to see how many of the show's original songs were missing. "Second Hand White Baby Grand" was my absolute favorite song from the show, but it (along with many other songs) wasn't included in the cd. The songs on the cd are great, but I really wish it had less covers of pop songs and more of the original songs. I'm considering returning it just because of the principle of it.

Sorry, I love this show, but the blaring holes of the missing songs is just unacceptable. Not to mention that they list 'touch me' as track #1. That song was the low-point of the entire season.

Even with the deluxe edition , it stills fall far short of all the great music from the series . Should have made it a double album cd , missing quite a few more songs .
