Editorial Reviews

On March 18th, 2014, Dennis DeYoung, the legendary front man of Styx and author of five key songs that define that band s career, returned to Los Angeles for the first time during his solo career to play a sold out show at the El Rey Theater. Recorded live for AXS-TV and captured in pristine HD quality, the performance has been slated for release via Frontiers Records.

Los Angeles FM radio giant 100.3 The Sound aided in show promotion with morning show host Uncle Joe Benson offering tickets to listeners in limited supply, just 20 seats available to winning entrants. In just a few short hours of the show s announcement, tickets sold out at an astounding fan appreciation price of just five dollars. With gratitude to fans that have supported DeYoung over the years, the show was truly a gift of thanks to long-time fans that haven t seen him perform outside of Styx in Los Angeles, ever.

With doors slated to open at 8:00 pm, fans started to line the sidewalk on Wilshire Boulevard with tickets in hand hours beforehand. They were all buzzing about what songs the band might perform.....not even their wildest expectations came close to what they would get absolutely, positively blown away by.

The amazing stage set was designed by DeYoung s son. Through the black backdrop shone multiple gemlike circles that glowed from one side of the stage to the other like a blanket of stars with the colors of the rainbow. Neon-like spots aimed both high and low rained down an array of light that swept over the audience. Packed from the front of the stage to the back of the house, the inside of the El Rey seemed more like a night at the Forum in 1985; just bigger than life and ready for broadcast.
Opening the show with The Grand Illusion, the band performed for an hour and a half, and saw DeYoung joyously and playfully interacting with the crowd. On two occasions he was handed items from the audience that he shared with fans. One was a copy of the Styx Paradise Theater album, on vinyl, and another was a fan-made sign requesting a personal song favorite Desert Moon.

AXS-TV brought in a 25+ foot boom arm and 8 cameras to capture the magic of the show and the house production offered simply the most crisp and well perfected tone the band could create for a night that fans are going to cherish owning documentation of!

Bloody fantastic...DDY still has the chops and delivers the goods. His band is aces, and the man who sings the Tommy Shaw tracks nails it dead on vocally and guitar solos. It's nice to see and hear DDY back on the keys during Renegade, and Fooling Yourself, stepping out of the spotlight, but still adding that umph (keyboard sound) from the Styx songs. Of all the DDY tracks, Rocking The Paradise is an absolute jam! Mr. Roboto, Don't Let It End, Babe, Show Me The Way, Suite Madame Blue are all wonderful to hear live. You never hear Styx perform those live, and Lorelei is finally done right...James Young butchers this song in concert! I really wish Styx and DDY can settle their differences and do one last proper show for the road. As good as this is, it does miss JY and Tommy, and Styx really misses DDY, not only the voice, but especially the keyboard. There is no subsitute, but hand it to DDY for putting on a more proper Styx show than the so-called Styx. Fans of Styx will not want to pass this one uo.

My biggest complaint about Styx, other than the fact the it’s members can’t get along, is that I never liked the way they sounded live. I always thought that their studio recordings had a harder and tighter rock edge, and their live offerings had more of a soft and pop sound. Even after Dennis’ ouster from the band, the Styx sound (with the noted replacement of Dennis’ contribution) remained the same to my ears.

My first impression of Dennis’ new record was, “Oh my god, these guys rock!” It’s true that Dennis can’t belt out his voice like he used to, and I detect his timing is a little off in a few places, but this is probably the best live version of Styx I have ever heard! Dennis really put together a great band and his guitar players are excellent rock musicians. Not only can they play Tommy and JY’s guitar parts, their vocals are equally impressive.

My only complaint about this record is the omission of “Miss America.” I don’t know why Dennis doesn’t want to perform that one, maybe there’s a legal reason or some kind of loyalty to JY, but it is sadly missed.

Unfortunately for Styx fans, we have to accept the division between Dennis and Tommy and enjoy modern Styx in one or both of it’s current forms. I have given up hope for a reunion, and I don’t think we will ever see a single Styx again. That being said, Dennis’ version is awesome! This record nails the Styx live experience and is probably the most “true to the original records” show I’ve heard form any version of Styx.

Dennis De Young with New band members has out Styx ,Styx. where in Styx Lawrence Gowen is a weak replacement voice wise of Dennis's songs. Dennis new member August Zadra sounds almost exactly as Tommy Shaw so you get the more realistic version of what Styx sounded like in the 70's and 80's when the band of original members played nicely. Watch Zadra do Fooling Yourself and Crystal Ball you will be amazed) I also think they are as good if not better musicians. All you have to do is watch the last live styx dvd with Shaw and James Young (where they do Grand Illusion/Pieces of Eight albums with this one and see for yourself. That was the one thing I missed when they dropped Dennis De Young and replaced him with Gowen. most of the top hit songs were Dennis songs , though Gowen does a admirable job, he does not have the operatic volume/range in his voice that Dennis has. he is not Dennis. now with this DVD you get the closes to the original Styx sound since the late 80's. I have seen Styx over the years since the 70's and this reminds me a lot of how they sounded back when they were original. Dennis still can belt out the voice at age 67. Just watch Suite Madam Blue

I have to say I really enjoyed It! At times At moments I found myself saying wait a minute this is Dennis' band! . Dennis to me me has been one of the vital components in the music of Styx. He has a great band! With that being said I think he should record the new CD that Frontier Records want him to do! Go for it Dennis !

At 67 years of age, Dennis proves that he still has it, his voice hits every note just as he did oh so long ago. He takes another giant leap forward with his new band. Not just because they can now "bring it" with the old Styx numbers that were Tommy Shaw classics, but they are tight and they look like they are having a ball every step of the way. Dennis proves over and over that he has no problem sharing the spotlight and the entire band proves worthy, completely nailing every single song they play.

The only complaint I have is that Dennis only touches on his solo career once with "Desert Moon" and completely skips over his most recent release "100 Years From Now", an album that contained some really great songs.

Other than that, leaving "Rockin' The Paradise" off the DVD (though included on the CD) seems a bit of a misfire, but the rest of the show rocks so much you'll hardly notice it's missing.

Seeing how Styx fired Dennis and hired a DDY clone, it's only fair Dennis gets a Shaw clone to do Tommy's music and what a clone this guy is! Dennis said he personally hand picked this new band and it is a young energetic very tight band! The CD's sound great! No "loudness wars" to worry about, very well produced! The DVD is filmed in superb HD quality! It's not a 5.1 audio, just a stereo mix but it is a very excellent mix! You can hear the drums roll from one speaker across to the next! As for Dennis' voice...has he lost it you might ask? Can this 67 yr old still get out there and boogy??? YES YES YES! Dennis' voice is STRONG! Just listen to Suite Madame Blue if you have any doubts! He is strong, sharp and sounds great! If you are a Styx fan, you will NOT be disappointed by this DVD! The Tommy Shaw songs are also very well done! Dennis also does "Desert Moon" from his solo career. Get this excellent CD/DVD package!
