3.0 out of 5 stars Another simplistic Max Martin production
By Mtn97 on October 17, 2021
THE MUSIC
Remember when Coldplay music made you feel something? Many of the negative reviews have already said that this album was an overt attempt at commercial success and relevance. That seems undisputed. Because of that, nothing in this album connects emotionally or “raises the pulse,” as another review aptly pointed out.

My biggest problem was how familiar some of the songs sounded. The track Biyutyful (apparently English was destroyed in this new Coldplay universe) has a phrase that repeats: “Love me love me love me” — which recalled (for me at least) the Heavy D lyrics, “Gyrlz they, gyrlz they love me...” Every part of My Universe sounded like a pop song you'd already heard. Must be that Max Martin simplicity that's infected so much of music over the years. I get it, My Universe is supposed to be a song for the masses that transcends age, language, and country borders. Unfortunately, we older listeners have been around the galaxy long enough to know we've heard it all before.

Still -- I’m not as bitter about the album as the one-star reviewers. It has its moments, enough of them that I can choose to just forget my gripes on a given day. I bought it, I might as well try to enjoy it.

THE ITEM
The record was moronically shipped, unsecured in a poly bag, damaging the hell out the LP. They reshipped a new one in an LP mailer, which was great. But the pink sleeve inside was ripped! And the vinyl itself didn’t look like the photo. It was more dark bronze, and it had a bunch of dust, paper shavings and white threads all over it. WTH. Disappointed about the muddy color. Have seen this happening all across Amazon.

BONUS
It came with codes to download the album MP3s, which was awesome. The album, for some reason, had double the amount of paper inserts. WHY. It’s just so odd that these kinds of mistakes occurred on such a high profile release.
