I was skeptical when I heard about this compilation of music because, as a huge RUSH fan, I expected it to really fall short. Apparently DARKSTAR originally had a bunch of great, classic RUSH songs as the soundtrack, and due to some crappy Hollywood greed tactics by Universal, the Producers dumped the idea and replaced the songs with their own, custom scored music. It is amazing, and truly lives up to the expectations one would expect of a AAA touring act. The music ranges from eerie, ambient tracks to full out rockers. Jimmy Pitts on keyboards is epic, his style more aligned to virtuosic guitar work like you'd expect from Vai, but the guitar neck laid out on a table for the talented Pitts to burn up with hand-played arpeggios and leads that seem impossible on keyboards. Likewise, Bill Bruce is phenomenal with his tasteful passages, grinding rhythms, and signature classical guitar riffs mixed with well written layered leads. If you're a fan of Vai, Zappa, TSO, Rush, Yes, and all progressive, this is the record for you.

Beeing a RUSH fan I was first a bit disappointed after hearing that they no longer provide the score for Darkstar. But my opinion changed really quickly after listening to score for the first time. I have to admit that even RUSH couldn't have done it better. The music does not only fit perfectly to the scenes it also adds a lot to the atmosphere. But most important for a Soundtrack release: the music also works outside the game. Nothing like an evening stroll through the dark, snow-covered countryside while listening to the Darkstar score on your MP3 player.

BTW - if you're interested in buying the game and the score you should consider to buy the Captains Box and get tho whole bundle.

The soundtrack is the best part of the game. In fact, it's the only good part of Darkstar (see my review of the interactive movie for more on that).

This double album is a nice mix of both the ambient, exploration music, as well as the head-bangin rock and roll riffs found in the cutscenes. If you want style comparisons, mix Blue Man Group with Nightwish and throw in a little bit of Sonic Adventure as spice.

It's a fantastically varied soundtrack and makes for a great music experience apart from the game. The only complaint I have is with disc 2. There isn't a lot of balance between ambient, and hardcore rock on that disc, as it's almost entirely rock and roll tracks. Nothing wrong with this, but without a little counterbalance, track after track of heavy rock riffs gets a little routine and they start to sound alike.

Ambient standouts include "Mindscape," the theme of the awful labyrinth section. Go figure it has one of the catchiest tunes of the ambient tracks. "Requiem for a Blue Dot," a quiet piano melody. "Eternal Twilight," a catchy song that starts off quiet and melodic and gradually changes into a powerful guitar solo.

Rock and roll standouts include "One Two One," "Guardian" and "Lasting Memories." All are memorable guitar pieces with distinct melodies. Would make good driving music. Lasting Memories leaves you with a great sense of finality. Yeah, the album is over, and what a ride it was!

At least one enjoyable thing came out of the Darkstar game. Recommended for everyone who played the game and didn't enjoy it. I even recommend it to people who haven't played the game, as it stands even better on its own.
