Loved this all the way back to when it was a newly released vinyl record in the '70's. Was out of print for ever, not available even as a CD, so I was pleased to finally find it available as a download. I just don't understand why it's not released as a single unit, instead of as two volumes.
His worst live album. Get any of the others before this one; particularlay Night after Night, from the Birchmere or, of course Viva Terlingua - probably THE classic JJW.
Some of the Scampwalkers best work ever. But I ordered this for a friend on Dec. 16, 2005. It still has not arrived. I've spoken to customer reps 3 times from Amazon.com. I'm tired of apologies, and the delivery date is now pushed back to June-July 2006, so if you want this great music, don't try to get it from Amazon.
First, Amazon is to be commended for providing a service here, save not for Amazon making this widely available in MP3 form this is a hard album to come by indeed. Now, what makes Jerry Jeff Walker a great artist is, of course, talent...But, the man is multi-dimensional. He can imbue a song with a heart and soul that the finest country epic story-telling songs have. He can sing in a downhome melodic way that fits like hand-in-glove. And he can rip it up and get the party started as good as The Stones or The Who. Plus he wrote one of the greatest American Standards in modern times: "Mr. Bojangles"! Enough of all this as I sense you know and love Jerry Jeff already.
On the original LP this was in fact the second of two records, thus the volume 2 does have more meaning other than the "trick" when the CD was out (not for long enough apparently if used ones go for over $50) where you had to buy two individual CDs rather than one specially priced double CD. I remember at the time I was 17 and my roommate had the double-LP. I always skipped to Mr. Bojangles and played that final side 4 instead of "wasting time" with side 3. Well, well, well time (I'm 53) has a way of correcting things if one only pays attention. Finally I can appreciate what a jewel, as well as a look inward, to who Jerry Jeff Walker and his friends were by putting this on and listening straight through. These guys were living in a special world which was a lot kinder and gentler than the acid soaked San Francisco scene of the late sixties - and not only the music, but the spoken word poetry particularly transports the listener, at least in one's mind-eye, to that special place. There's some definite self-indulgence, but we're better for it and I'm glad I've finally matured enough to evolve in a renaissance of realization how wonderful this is. Plus, I've still got my side four (Mr. Bojangles till the fitting Will The Circle Be Unbroken) which, at times, rocks as hard at The Who Live at Leeds IMHO. This is utterly fantastic music to enjoy on the screen porch with friends, have some good drink to share, and just be taken to Jerry Jeff's world. It's a journey I regularly do and never tire of.
So, if you are getting into Jerry Jeff Walkers world this is a pretty much required listening. You need both volumes absolutely without question. The sound quality for MP3 is quite good as was the original recording was a good source to start with (open and warm analog sound in both studio and live recordings). Gone are the pops and ticks (I don't miss 'em) and you don't have to get up every 18 to 21 minutes to change sides. But mostly you have a chance to just hear something quite special that has depth yet is fun too. Here's hoping Amazon keeps selling this great album so us old fans, as well as new ones discovering great music, have access to it. Highly recommended!
I love the live recordings and several of the studio recordings. This album represents the last recordings of the Lost Gonzo Band (Inman, Nunn, Livingston, et al) and the first recordings of his later band (Rambo, Wynan, Cobb, etc.). The live cuts are the Gonzos as well as the better studio cuts. The follow-up band is not as good (and never was, IMHO). I never understand the obsession with Hondo. Yes, I lived in Austin and visited Luckenbach; it reminds me of when a good friend really likes someone that you think is just okay (or not nice at all). Hence, recordings of his poetry, etc. are an indulgence of the artist (similar to Paul McCartney inflicting Linda Eastman on us or John Lennon inflicting Yoko Ono on us). Avoid the Hondo-related cuts and take the new band with a grain of salt.
First of all, why they would ever turn this into Volume 1 and Volume 2 I don't understand. You need to buy them both. The music is sensational if you like Austin music at all. The Hondo poetry, I think, is great. It puts your head in exactly the right spot to fully appreciate the music. Just so no one gets scared of all this talk about Hondo and cowboy poetry, the cuts are short and sweet. Get both volumes. I think that if you have this and can't see clear to get most or all of JJW's stuff, this set is the one to get.
