A Note About the Ending and Theories of Time Travel

If you're curious about the lesser known theory of time travel I use, see this blog post I wrote in Oct 2014 on the various theories, and an explanation about the ending, including the seemingly anachronistic cell phones: bit.ly/TTTheories

This a phenomenal read. The imagination and fun spirit that went into writing this book came through loud and clear. Isabelle Rochon works for the British Museum and is anticipating a promotion. She is at a reenactment of a ball when she finds herself transported back to 1834. The fun begins immediately when she meets our H, Phineas Montague. He is my new favorite Hero. The simple romance you feel that radiates from how Phineas can be proper, protective and seductive is astounding IMO.

He has the disposition of Mr. Darcy and Mr. Knightly all dry and serious but when you want charm he sweeps Isabelle in a waltz. When you want sexy he turns up the heat. The love scenes are steamy, but not overdone. The pair form an alliance to appear engaged but they both get way more than bargain for. He thinks she is quite odd with her unfamiliar dialect. Questioning," What the devil is a dude?"

She befriends Phin's cousin Ada and she is the first that she shares her secret with. I had a lot of laughs, sighs, heart palpatations and some tears as well. You really feel the passion grow between the couple and you are cheering them along but you empathize with Isabelle's conflict. She is struggling to get back to her world but in order to do that she has to leave behind the man she has fallen desperately in love with. Than there is Phineas's battle of wanting to do what will make Isabelle happy but he must let her go for that to happen.

*************SPOILERS**************

That is when the tears came because he is so in love with her and the author does not leave you out in his inner thoughts and fears. When Isabelle goes back to her time the emotion they both experience just reaches in and pulls at your heart. The image of Phineas falling to his knees as she disappears.

Angela Quarles's Must Love Breeches is clever, original, and so good that you want more as soon as you put it down. It's a delicious mash up with something for time travel romance lovers, Jane Austen devotees, and those who simply enjoy a fresh take on historical romance. Her unique premise combines the best elements of contemporary and historical romance, while incorporating all of the fish-out-of-water elements a time travel romance.

I love that her heroine, Isabelle, doesn't simply stop being a modern woman because she's transported to the past. And it's even better that Isabelle loves history and has some sense of what living in the past might entail, even though the reality of it isn't always quite what she expected. And the hero, Phineas, is quite the adventurer in his own right. He has an adventurous spirit and one open to the oddities he perceives in Isabelle. The inclusion of a historical figure, Ada Lovelace, as a secondary character only makes the story that much richer.

Most of all, I was impressed with Quarles's ability to combine so many elements so seamlessly and successfully. Isabelle thinks and views the world as a modern woman. Her reactions are modern, and yet Phineas's world and attitudes are thoroughly grounded in the 19th century. And through it all, Quarles manages to thread freshness and humor, making a novel a complete delight.

When British Museum employee Isabelle Rochon is transported back in time to 19th century England, she initially revels in the new experience, but Phineas, Lord Montagu, proves a distraction she could not anticipate. As their attraction grows, she must decide where she truly belongs.

I read a lot of time travel romances, but have only a few that I'd read over and over again. This is one of them. The other reviewers have covered all the bases, so all I can add is how "real" this book felt. I mean, the best part of a time travel story is seeing that particular time period through the eyes of the main character. Most stories give the reader one or two "adjustment" issues that usually cover all the expected challenges, but in MLB, the author gave me a new taste of 19th century England, and it felt ... believable. Isn't that why we read? We know it's fiction, but when you really get transported into the author's world, you get lost in the story. That's what happened to me. I loved it!

If you're a fan of Barbara Longley's time travel romances, you'll love this one too.

**SPOILER ALERT (sort of)**

The ending is not in error, by the way...because she time traveled, her "present" was changed because of the things she does in the past. Her "present" at the start of the book is actually 1973. Her present wasn't 2014 which we all presumed when we started the book. I didn't get it at first either. It's a time loop that begs the question: which came first, the chicken or the egg -- the altered 1973 or her passage through the 1800's that actually caused the altered future. At least that's my take on it ;)

I was drawn to this book because of the time travel aspect and the romance (because it certainly wasn’t the cover or the title, although that should have been warning enough). I love to see how a woman cast back in time would cope with the loss of the conveniences of modern day living and deal with the huge paradigm shift in the way women were perceived, and how they lived. This book has time travel, and there is romance, but there were so many holes it leaked like a sieve. I had to push myself through the sophomoric dialogue to get to the end – which was no small feat.

I’ll start with my all-time pet peeve – valley-girl-speak. I cringed when I read “Lord Drool Worthy” or “Lord Hottie Pants.” And it was used ad nauseum. I think perhaps this book was intended for a younger audience? I don’t know. But it was insulting to my intelligence.

Isabelle is cast back in time via a magical silver card case, and finds herself in the 19th century. She speaks with an “American” accent, so naturally she slips and uses a great deal of modern slang. This could be funny at times, but I was amazed at how quickly the other characters seemed to gloss over this apparently minor glitch in her conversational style. Words like “wow” and heavy use of contractions. Granted the author makes sure Isabelle is aware of her need to alter her vocabulary, but she really doesn’t do a very good job of it, and it was very inconsistent – yet not too many people were fazed by this back-and-forth weird dialect of hers. I thought it made the writing seem awkward and unsophisticated.

VARIOUS AND SUNDRY SPOILERS:

The H – Montagu – apparently has this bad boy reputation that he has purposely created for reasons that really turned out to be very anticlimactic and uninteresting.
