We are introduced to the 4 main characters/horsewomen – Piper Bane who is Pestilence, Ginny Lack who is Famine, Nia Amort who is Death and Anna Frey who is War. The 4 women grew up together and have known about their family's legacy and the risks that they might be the generation that starts the apocalypse. Piper couldn't handle this knowledge and ran away from Beckwell in hopes of avoiding her fate. For 10 years she has traveled the world never staying in one place to long for fear of causing a fatal outbreak of an infectious disease. She reluctantly returns to town for the wedding of her best friend Ginny not knowing that a group that calls themselves the League has been planning this to kick off the apocalypse with Piper being the main source.
Dr Daniel Quilan is the town healer. He is also part Fomorian – gods with destructive powers. He has always tried to fight the chaos, darkness, and death that surrounds his family legacy but his twin brother walks the line between between both. Daniel and Piper were childhood sweethearts who were engaged before Piper ran away 10 years ago. She always feared of making him sick one day and could bear the thought – but what she didn't know is Daniel didn't think their pairing would work out either due to the risks of him becoming a hostile and monstrous being.
Lots of world building and set up for the future books. Even with the book heavily leaning on the paranormal side – there is still plenty of humor and romance. I enjoyed this book and look forward to the other 3 stories.
Piper Bane is returning to Beckwell, after ten years of running away. One of her best friends is getting married. She's just hoping to avoid running into Daniel Quilan, the only man she's loved, but left. Her plan doesn't go well, when she crashes her vehicle into a tree and the first person on the scene is Daniel.
Beckwell, is a paranormal town hidden by an erected barrier. It soon becomes evident that the barrier is changing, and traps everyone in the town. With everyone trapped, the townspeople start to mutate and there is a sinister plot at hand to force Piper and her friends to bring about the apocalypse.
Piper and her friends have a plan of their own, that will require each one to accept who they are and the powers that they weld, then try to use them to stop the apocalypse from happening. While doing so, they need to learn who the members of the League are.
One thing that hasn't changed, is despite not wanting to run into Daniel, it is apparent that the two care about each other, and are stronger together than apart. The two will need to set aside their stubbornness and fear, in order to be together. Piper has the potential of making Daniel sick, but Daniel's lineage carries its own concerning problems. Piper has a new sidekick, a stalking morphing toad, with an awesome attitude!
If you enjoy paranormal with humor, you will love this!
