Mutt Muffs provide passive sound reduction. They are not noise canceling. Your dog will still be able to hear, just not as loudly. They will not eliminate sound. Mutt Muffs are not designed to cure thunderstorm phobia. Most dogs know a storm is coming long before there is any thunder. Their anxiety quite often is not related to sound. Mutt Muffs are designed to prevent hearing damage. Training: We recommend putting the Mutt Muffs on in the loud environment. Most dogs will knock them off within a few minutes because they don't understand why you've done this to them. At which time, you can see the realization in his face. Mutt Muffs offer hearing protection for your four-legged family members. Your dog's keenest sense is smell and number two is hearing. If you think something is loud, your dog is probably in pain. After heredity, long exposure to loud noise is the biggest contributor to deafness. Good news though... noise-induced hearing loss is different in one very important way... it can be reduced or prevented altogether. The inner foam that used is the exact same ester resin foam that is found in many high end commercial head sets designed for humans. Based on the materials used, the estimated decibel reduction is between 21 and 24, assuming proper fit and a good seal against your pup's head. That's 21-24 dB reduction in the human hearing range of 20,000 cycles per second. Our canine friends can hear much higher frequencies (in the range of 43,000 cycles per second). As the frequency goes up, so does the effectiveness of Mutt Muffs, simply because the higher the frequency, the more easily it is absorbed. Therefore, Mutt Muffs are especially effective at protecting against the high frequency wind whistles and shrieks humans cannot even hear. There is another factor that comes into play as well. The dog's own ear flaps are down and covering the ear canal, providing yet one more layer of protection.
