So, if I enjoy this series so much, why 3 stars??? Well, I just didn't find the main couple of this book, Vivian and Etain, as engaging and interesting as couples in the previous books. I still enjoyed the continuation of the storyline, and look forward to reading the next book - but I did find I was more interested in the appearances throughout the story of all the couples from previous books than this couple.
That being said - I freaking LOVED this one. First of all, I do not mind that when Vivi and Etain meet, they go straight into mate mode. I mean, they're both paranormals so to them - that IS the normal way of doing things. Etain didn't have to contend with having to convince his "human" mate, because they both grew up knowing and accepting how the whole mating thing goes. So that part, I didn't mind at all. I absolutely loved Vivi's squire, omg he is the biggest teddy bear ever ! I truly appreciated Etain knowing how special he was to Vivi and finding ways to make him a part of their lives as a couple.
Let's talk about Gavriel .... pretty sure he freaking owns my heart, even more than Keeland and Kendrick. I mean, the feels hit me HARD in that scene with the books. Wow. He wields the power he so obviously has in such a gentle manner. Of course I'll be re reading his book very soon. Then there were the scenes with Etain, the dagger, and then stone and the Fae warriors, omg even more feels !!! How can you not just love them all after that ???
So yes, this was a great for me, and I know not everyone will agree, but part of what made it good for me was the fact that Meryn wasn't too present. Don't get me wrong, I loved her in the first 4 books, but now? Not so much. I get that she's anti social, but she says she doesn't care that people are sick, because she doesn't know them, and they think that's ok? That just feels wrong to me. At least she wasn't over the top annoying in this book so that's a plus.
I wish we could get a little more clarity about what's going on because that conflict feels super vague. In all honesty, I feel like the last 4 books would have been better as a spin off series, rather than a continuation of the original storyline. Also, good gracious, the editing !!!! Seriously, if you have to push the release a couple of days so someone with good grammar can do a read through and make quick changes, take it !
Each of the characters is interesting and well-rounded, and possess a unique personality that keeps everything fresh. Each one has a purpose that supports the main characters and the storyline in such a way that there are no wasted words or characters to be found.
The narrative and dialogue are written with such care that every word has a purpose. I've thoroughly enjoyed going back and re-reading each book and finding the threads that lead to events and actions in subsequent books.
There is so much humor in each offering, some blatant, some sneaky, that one could almost, ALMOST, forget that there is an underlying menace (no pun intended) stalking this world. This humor gives good balance to the sometimes disturbing central premise of the stories.
The unlikely linchpin in all of these books maintains the original style and form throughout the series, merely growing a bit more comfortable in this world as time goes by, but not losing the quirks and mannerisms that enamored me from the first.
All of the emotions are covered in every book. All of them.
The romantic vein in each book is lovely, believable, passionate and often slightly ridiculous, but in a favorable way.
Now, specifically about My Angel. Of course, I waited on tender hooks for this book to go live, and I dove right in.
The newest couple highlighted are well fleshed out, easily understood, and lovable. Etain and Vivian's passion is intense, and the spicy scenes are very well done. They each bring something different to the table, and the author uses them to further the storyline that has carried through all of the books.
There are answers to some questions from previous books, but there are also more questions thrown out for us lucky readers to ponder on as we await the next offering.
I have read many books and many series. I cannot recall any instance from those that garnered the same reaction that I've had with this series and this author. I don't know how she does it, but I am thankful that she does. Bewitched and Bewildered is a wonderful escape from the real world.
