The premise is fine. A plague has wiped out much of the world's population and the few survivors have taken refuge in isolated shelters. These are run as highly regulated institutions. Nothing has survived in the world outside. Or so we believe. In fact, Ivory escapes with the help of Aidan. They join a small outside community, find out the world has recovered, and many people have developed immunity to the plague. The problem now is a war for control of resources.
Without giving away the plot, which I found rather light, what I found most unbelievable is the types of resources that are available. These include clothes, food, books, beautiful furniture, fancy bedding, carpet, towels, hot running water, power, wind turbines, solar power, glass, sophisticated electronics. Pretty much everything you would expect from a highly developed technological society. I can't help wondering how these resources have been manufactured, grown, supplied, and maintained over the few decades since the plague struck.
For example, setting up and getting the raw materials to run a manufacturing line with the clean rooms needed for miniature electronics is not easy. Things break down as we know, and you need skilled people to create and repair them. How is the paper for the books manufactured? How are the carpets made? Where do the spare parts for the wind turbines come from. How are the solar panels repaired? How is the glass made?
On the whole, an OK book but not believable.
My Beginning is a book that is difficult to put down. Author, Melissa Kline, has created a descriptive story with all kinds of twists and turns. All of the unexpected surprises keep the reader turning the pages, wanting to know what is going to happen next. The love story between Ivory and Aidan is tender and sweet. Readers can really feel Ivory's pain when she almost loses Aidan. (Note: There is some adult material in the book - not too graphic, but conservative readers should be aware of this.)
My Beginning is a winning combination of romance and science fiction. Readers ages 15 and older who enjoy these genres will really enjoy the book. I highly recommend it.
I loved the concept and the story. It was a fast-paced, sweet read.
