Some involve well known characters from various author's fantasy worlds and others are new to readers. The characters are all interesting and each one is fully developed. The wedding situations are intriguing and a few are there as outside events that give more depth to the story. All are well written and enjoyable. This book is highly recommended.

I admit I purchased MY BIG FAT SUPERNATURAL WEDDING for the Harry Dresden (Jim Butcher) short, but I enjoyed all of the stories. I had heard of several of the other authors, but not read any of them previously. This is something I will correct very soon. The stories in MY BIG FAT SUPERNATURAL WEDDING are light, fluffy, and fun - a very nice summer distraction - and the short stories within a nice break from big, heavy novels. MY BIG FAT SUPERNATURAL WEDDING gives the reader a quick peek into these fun, exciting paranormal worlds, and whets the appetite for more.

Hugely entertaining look at weddings

This edited work is a lot of fun. We see nine short stories spread over 300 pages. The focus? Weddings and the supernatural. As with all such volumes, some works are more compelling than others. But, for the most part, each story works pretty well.

The book opens with a reimagining of the McCoy versus Hatfield feud, with spells meant to keep one from socializing with the other. Here, we see a young McCoy in love with a young Hatfield--risking the damage of a terrible spell. The essay shows how they hope to work around the obstacles and get married on their graduation day. This work is okay, but there are some distracting factors for me. Still, it is fun to see how the young people try to work around the spell.

A few other examples (no need for a 1,000 word review!). Jim Butcher has created an interesting character, Chicago's only wizard who is also a private investigator (Harry Dresden). There is a missing person on the day of the wedding of one of Harry's friends--the bride! Harry teams with a police officer who investigates weird events in Chicago. Murphy and Harry end up saving the day (if the wedding had gone through with a phony bride masquerading as the real one, Harry's friend would have been in deep trouble! All's well that ends well.

The third story is a gem--"Dead Man's Chest" by Rachel Caine. A cad wishes to marry Cecilia, purportedly out of love. In reality, he thinks he'll inherit her money. Venue for the wedding? A pirate ship. Of course, the kicker is that the pirates died long ago and are condemned to live anyhow. This works out well and leads to an improbable conclusion--but fun all along the way!

And so on. There are some really wonderful stories here, such as Lori Handeland's "Charmed by the Moon." Charmed by Elvis? Take a look at P. N. Elrod's "All Shook Up." I didn't like it much as it began, but it ended up a charming tale for me.

Anyhow, if you're in the mood for werewolves, undead, wizards, spells, and weddings, you might give this a look.

No introductory notes. I would proceed straight to the stories.

1. “Spellbound” by L.A. Banks: As a result of my rather extensive reading of mushy “supernatural romance”-s in various anthologies, I have developed a somewhat thick skin towards horrible writing that specialises in describing horny teen-agers/co-eds. But this novella had slackened my jaw. It was UNADULTERATED CRAP! Can you imagine BEGINNING a book with such a piece!
2. “Something Borrowed” by Jim Butcher: After the murky depths of sewers, this was like looking at the rainbow while smelling rosy air! God save Jim Butcher and his Dresden Files.
3. “Dead Man’s Chest” by Rachel Caine: Not bad. Not bad at all.
4. “All Shook Up” by P.N. Elrod: A rather naïve story resembling plain & decent bridesmaids who are presented to make the bride look dazzling or/and ravishing. Not exactly supernatural either.
5. “The Wedding of Wylda Serene” by Esther M. Friesner: Usually Jim Butcher or Charlaine Harris (or, in case she is present, then Patricia Briggs) steals the thunder of entire anthologies. But in this case, THIS was the ONE for me. This is a story that is absolutely brilliant, and I would be returning to this anthology simply to revisit this story many-many times.
6. “Charmed by the Moon” by Lori Handeland: Mediocre stuff. Too romantic for my taste, but others might be more charitable/appreciative.
7. “Tacky” by Charlaine Harris: People go ga-ga over Sookie Stackhouse. I am soooooooo floored by Dahlia, and her adventures! This is a very special story, and any one following these anthologies would do well to read this story before reading another Dahlia story in another Elrod-edited anthology (Strange Brew): “Bacon”.
8. “A Hard Day’s Night-Searcher” by Sherrilyn Kenyon: The story had begun brilliantly, with the adequate mix of wit, comedy and action. Then it became too predictably romantic, and unnecessarily (unless, once again, it’s the horny teenagers/co-eds who are the target audience) graphic. Blah!
9. “…Or Forever Hold Your Peace” by Susan Krinard: Apart from being a rather interesting mystery set in an alternate England nee Albion, this story had enough complexities, treacherous acts, magical acts, sexual tension, emotional tension etc. to give one curly hair. But it was VERY GOOD, and I would most assuredly look forward towards reaching more adventures of Kit & Olivia.

Now, it’s upto you to decide: to read, or, to not read.
