I feel like the overall story arc is spiraling out of control ... expanding too far and too fast in too many different directions with no real continuity in the active storyline with the ferals and the OG enemy who has yet to be identified. What's going on with Keelan? Where are Graham and Sascha or Lorcan and Oron? Or where are Adam and Adair or any of the other members of the Lycaonian units, etc. who were so central to the story so far for that matter? Ok, so the other pillar cities deserve some attention, but why not ease into that tangentially while consolidating the original arc? Instead we have new, completely divergent enemies--like random serial killers--and random characters that are popping up all over the place with no real development or integration into the "big picture" that we were all beginning to see as the mates of the Alpha unit began to appear and do the things they were each uniquely and fatefully suited for. In the first 4 books you could almost see and feel "Fate" taking a part, now Fate just seems to be ADHD or bipolar, like Meryn.
In the beginning there was depth to the characters and the bonds between them also deepened with each new addition whether it be by discovering new familial connections or by enriching the various interconnected relationships individually. That is sorely lacking in the latest installments. Now it's all just banally superficial and more than a bit disjointed. Any real deep commitment by these new characters/couples to the ongoing cause, to Meryn and Aiden and the rest of the original cast of characters and with the struggles all paranormals will be facing in the future would be impossible to swallow wothout some further character development and storyline integration. How can you believably weave these characters into the richer storyline when they lack substance and depth? It won't be enough to just say that a new character is, through someone's baby-sister-cousin's best friend's uncle's childhood sweetheart's adopted half-sister (or some other such convoluted nonsense) somehow some way connected to freaking Meryn and therefore that makes them insta-family and "we love you deeply forever" and can't make a decision without your particular skillset and flashes of uniquely brilliant input. There needs to be more to it than that, otherwise a great series of books will devolve into a series of increasingly frustrating and shallow Merynsodes
