Why do we celebrate Christmas each year?

The Bible explains it--the answer is clear.

Young children will discover the most important gift of all through charming rhyme and meaningful pictures.

About the Author

Crystal Bowman loves writing books for kids. Her books come in all shapes and sizes and many of them have become best sellers. Whether her stories are written in playful rhythm and rhyme, or short sentences for beginning readers, she tries to make them so enjoyable that kids will want to read them over and over again. "But the most important part," she says, "is to teach children that God loves them and cares about them very much."

You can find Claudine diving the oceans with Technicolor fish, camel riding in the Sahara, trekking in a jungle populated with wild monkeys, or exploring the African savanna in search of huge elephants. Although adventurous, she sometimes gets scared when coming upon a giant spider or other scary beasts. At that time she heads back to the comfort of her studio, where she draws all the wonderful things she saw and dreams of her next visit to faraway lands.

America's Christian parents are forever trying to balance the secular, materialistic Christmas with the Christ mass celebration focusing on Jesus' birth. To help teach young children the real meaning of Christmas, Crystal Bowman's "My Christmas Gift" can help.

This colorful, rhyming board book opens with a young boy and girl rushing to the tree on Christmas morning, eager to open the presents laying beneath it. But, the author asks, What is Christmas really about? Why do we give each other presents?

Bowman then briefly explains the Christmas story, beginning with angels singing about Christ the Savior. Because God loved us so much, she explains, he gave us his son Jesus, and the true gift of Christmas is that if we believe in and love him, we'll receive eternal life. That means we'll go to heaven, where there is no sadness or troubles. The book ends:

"It's fun to find presents under the tree
and give Christmas gifts to your family.
But the very best gift comes from above -
It's Jesus the Savior, wrapped in God's love."

What I Like:: This is a super succinct, toddler and preschool friendly explanation of what Christmas is about and how Jesus changes our lives. The illustrations by Claudine Gevry are big and colorful, without being gaudy. Depicting familiar Christmas scenes as well as biblical ones, the illustrations are sure to capture young childrens' attention.

What I Dislike: Nothing.

Overall Rating: Very Good.

I have a one year old and lengthy explanations on the meaning of Christmas would not go over well. So this book is perfect, about 4 sentences per page in a nice rhyming format. And, as a Christian mom who also thinks there is nothing wrong with Santa and presents ALSO being a part of this holiday, I appreciate the not-over-the-top message. Yes, we celebrate Christmas because of Jesus' birth. And yes, I want my son to understand that. But we also celebrating through exchanging gifts and that's fun too.

All in all, a nice short and fun book explaining the "reason for the season".

This is the 2nd Chrystal Bowman books that I've gotten and I adore both of them. I was looking for a christian book to help explain the true meaning of Christmas for my 7, 5 and 3 year old children. My 7yr old is a bit beyond this book but he still appreciated it and read it more than once. My 5 year old absolutely loves it and wants to read it almost every night. My 3 year old enjoys it too and often fights with her older brother for it. Since she's not reading yet it will be something she grows into so I'm sure it will be read in our family for many years, and will be given down to our grandchildren should the book last that long! (It has the stiff cardboard pages so it definitely should.) It has a fantastic message about Jesus being the true, most special gift...better than anything under the tree, and the rhyming content makes it fun to read. I'm definitely going to be checking out her other holiday books.

I really like this book for a number of reasons: rhyming couplets are easy to read and keep little one's attention, the illustrations are beautiful, it is long enough to get the message across but short enough to be perfect for a toddler.
More than anything, though, the message is beautiful: we celebrate Christmas with gifts and trees but the reason for Christmas is Jesus, our Savior.
This book will be a very important part of our Christmas traditions for years to come.
