I've been wanting to read this book for a while. It's cover would float around sometimes on Facebook or when I was skimming through kindle books so when a chance to finally read it came along I snatched it! I immediately was taken a hold of by the story and characters from the first chapter! There is this mysterious love/hate dance you do with our leading male character, Lock. He's this arrogant, snarky, temperamental young boy that gets under your skin just like he does with Rachael, our leading female. But then the author sneaks in little glimpses of his softer side and his "human" side and that's when we slowly find ourselves falling for a demon. We find ourselves standing on the side of all banished spirits. Whether they are good or evil! Crazy right? Well that's just how fantastic a writer Jacinta is. The reader has conflicting emotions about being on a side that isn't all sunshine and sparkles.
Lock is a spirit that has been banished and left to roam between dimensions not really being allowed to "live" without being attached to a living human host. He is on a quest to find a place where he and other banished spirits can finally be accepted. Heaven and hell are off limits to creatures like himself so his entire existence is spent finding the mysterious "staff" and finally coming to a peaceful rest. Lock has done this for ages and when his path finally crosses with Rachael things begin to change.
Rachael was a normal teenager, living a normal life with her mom. She had to deal with her dads strange mumblings and odd behavior, but when she discovers that her dad may not have been mad after all she's thrown into a situation no person wants to find themselves in. Being attached to a demon and having your life source slowly taken from you is not what she signed up for!! Rachael will have to figure out a way to help Lock so she can ultimately help herself. What happens though when your initial disposition to your new company begins stirring feelings that shouldn't be there? Does Lock feel the same way? Can he?
Find out how these two journey through worlds of different dimensions where they are faced with seven deadly sins: greed, vanity, sloth, lust, gluttony, wrath, and envy. Find out if they survive! You really want to! Jacinta wrote this book with a perfect pace and never lost her reader. She keeps a hold of you until there aren't any pages left to turn. I'm highly anticipating the second book in the series 'The Reaper'! I must have it NOW! Her descriptions are precise and bold and take your imagination through new unrestrained proportions! Get fired up and let everything come to life for you! You aren't reading a story, you are a part of the story! I rarely pick up a book more than once...I will read this again! I absolutely adore it! I give this book my thumbs up!
When Rachael travels to Whitehaven to visit her ailing father who dies soon after she unwittingly becomes her father's demons new host. Lock links himself to her with a kiss, wrapping her in chains and tying her soul to him. As a banished spirit he must feed off a human host to remain in our realm. In a welcomed twist, the pair become more dependent on each other as their feelings for each other grow stronger, all the while their journey takes them to the depths of hell to face the 7 deadly sins.
Maree's imagery is vivid and creative and you are transformed into this world alongside Rachael and Lock. I loved the hierarchy of the realms with the Royals, different levels of spirits and the Hunters. The character's had depth and realism to them even if most of them were demons or spirits. I also liked that the storyline was complex and detailed, giving us history on the different spirits and insight into their current names. Linking the 7 deadly sins into the story was pure genius right down to the differing eye color of the spirits that linked beautifully with their unique names and backgrounds.
In a race against time Rachael and Lock along with several other spirits and their hosts attempt to defeat the sins, therefore gaining access to the third realm where Lock's soul can be safe from the Hunter's and he can find peace. In the end as the Hunter's close in, what will Lock sacrafice for Rachael?
I was hooked from the first page and I anxiously await the sequel, Maree leaves us with an unexpected twist at the end, I must know what the future will hold for Lock and Rachael!
4/5 stars, definitely recommend this book, but that's just my two cents!
