It is a disease of the rear legs and spine, and though not painful, it is debilitating. The gene is similar to the one that causes ALS in humans. I am really grateful to have this service available and this book. I am now prepared for the time when I may have to deal with it to help my amazing and beautiful rescue dog.
My dog's health in his back legs has been slowly declining over the past 18 months. over the past 2 months, we noticed that his back paws are slowly starting to knuckle, causing his nails to bleed. Before this, we were told his lack of strength in his back legs was due to a birth defect he had in one of his hips, along with arthritis in his lower back. A second opinion from a vet confirmed our worst fear: DM.
Reading the author's story about his dog, his experiences, and his feelings is helping me with my best friend, my 13 year old BFF, Joshua. Hopefully, with the author getting the word out there about this incurable disease, it'll help with finding a cure, someday.
