The result - In My Father's Footsteps - is a heartwarming tribute to Jack Cranstoun, an everyday soldier who touched the lives of the men who knew him and, almost from the grave, gifts his daughter with another look into his life through the memories of the soldiers he fought with.
Warning: have tissues at the ready. There were several times during this short book that my eyes welled up. In particular, the memories of a soldier named Sam who tells the author of the life of a two-year-old boy he saved. "Somewhere in France is a man, now getting on in years, who owes his life to the nineteen-year-old man Sam was."
In another especially compelling segment of the book Cranstoun describes how the soldiers made leaps across the "Mole"; failure would have meant death. As Cranston marks out the distance and then makes a running leap, she discovers she wouldn't have survived.
Great read and highly recommended.
