About the Author

Livi Gosling studied illustration in Cornwall before returning back to her hometown in Hertfordshire. Livi draws inspiration from travel, nature and food. When she isn’t illustrating, you’ll find her walking in the countryside, cooking, or tending to her vegetable garden. After getting an allotment in 2019, she discovered a love of gardening that intensified during lockdown 2020. Her allotment was a safe haven throughout scary, uncertain times that Livi is very grateful for. Livi has since moved on to building a kitchen garden in her new home and is passionate about gardening for wellbeing.

This is a wonderful book for kids to learn about gardening. I am so suprised how detailed it is. I got this for my 3 year old daughter, but it’s definitely still too advanced for her. I’d say this is a great book for kids around age 5-7, as stated in the details section. I still look forward to going over things with my daughter more and more as she grows.

The illustrations are gorgeous and this would make a great gift! If only this was a part of standard curriculum - I really wish it was!!

This book is a detailed intro to basic gardening for young children. It is thoughtfully divided into sections so you can go from cover to cover, but you can also skip to the relevant parts for your situation. It offers many options for most projects so you can adapt to your environment. I think it relate well to children while using correct vocabulary and terms. My young friend found it fun and interesting especially the section on the wild garden. I think this book is appropriate for all ages of children as you can dig as deep or lightly as you follow their interests. The illustrations are informative and light hearted. This would make a lovely gift.

My First Garden is a beautiful and well written picture book with a lot of information geared at the elementary age range. It starts with the very basics: explaining what a seed is, what is needed for plants to grow, different plants and their specific conditions, what seasons to plant and harvest various plants, vegetable families, where to plant (pots, soil specifications, etc.); and expands into more advanced topics like companion planting, food chains, pollination, fixing common gardening problems, and much more. There are also activity suggestions along the way, from how to plant various seeds, growing from kitchen scraps, and observing nature, to homemade pickles, pressed flowers, and seed balls. There is a Glossary in the back to define important words that may be unfamiliar to this age group.

The BEST part about this book is that after reading it, one of my elementary aged kids has become very inspired to grow various plants, and has been able to do so with very little supervising assistance! He was able to communicate what he needed me to buy/find for him to get started, and even what he thinks may have gone wrong in our larger family garden with plants that didn't do as well. He began with planting strawberries, and now has expanded to include a couple other plants in his own small garden area. I ordered this book with my kids in mind, and am so pleased that one of them has been inspired to plant his first garden!

My First Garden is a generously sized hard cover book with thick matte finish pages. The book feels robust and should handle the rough and tumble life it will lead as a book to be used inside and out.

The book is very thoughtfully designed with simple short text entries for the subjects instead of long paragraphs that could bore young readers. I also appreciate the lovely art style, which is colorful, organic, and soothing to look at. The book is not only informative, but beautiful. A wide variety of topics are covered and there should be something in here for everyone, whether you live in a city apartment or on a farm.

My 5-year-old son enjoys looking through the book and reading sections. He has asked me questions about items, and asked to try new things.

All in all... a lovely book.

My first garden isn't your average plant book for kids! This book is well-rounded from seed to soil to sharing your knowledge with the community! Not to debate global warming, but I've noted a trend where children's books only seem to focus on the same topics and phrases without digging deeper and teaching children beyond 'plastic straws bad.' I love that this book touches on topics such as seasonal food, plant pals for a healthy garden ecosystem, problem-solving, and making a difference by supporting wildlife. This book even teaches children why adding a pond and pollinator-friendly plants to their garden has a beneficial chain reaction. This book and a set of preschool-sized gardening tools would make a wonderful gift for a young child.

While this book is still a bit too advanced for my 3 year old, they still like to have me read sections to them. I think it's a great (and surprisingly in depth) gardening book for slightly older kids. The illustrations are gorgeous and it's well organized so that you can read through it start to finish, or pick a section of interest and jump straight to that. It uses language that kids can understand while not treating them like babies. I actually learned a lot from it as well!

I got this book to enjoy with our grand ones and we like it. It's a pretty, hardback book with the title in eye-catching shiny foil. Inside, the pages are matte (as opposed to slick and shiny) and covered in pretty artwork. This book is packed with easy to follow steps on how to grow foods, plants or flowers. Older kids can read through and pick their own projects with a little help from adults on gathering supplies. For our younger ones we just read to them and we decided that our first project would be to plant some hearty marigolds. Fun book that makes gardening easy to understand and seem like an achievable hobby.

All explained in big print with fab illustrations.

There’s lots of practical ideas to try out too / creating pickle, pressed flowers, and a favourite with our children - the windowsill garden (with cress).

A very enjoyable gardening book for all the family.

This is a lovely book, it’s aimed at children of the 5 to 7 years old and upward age range - however older kids will love it and mums and dads can use it to start an interest in gardening even earlier age. You can start with the basics, a few seeds in a windowsill box will give the opportunity to track the progress of a plants growth - and you can work through to wildlife gardens……..this really does cover a lot. This book is well illustrated and is written in such a way that it’ll appeal to kids.

This DK children's book, "My First Garden: For Little Gardeners Who Want to Grow", is an absolute delight. Its vibrant, colourful hardcover is very inviting, and the book introduces children to the wonders of nature and gardening in bite-sized topics which are highly informative without being overwhelming. The contents comprehensively cover all aspects of gardening and also introduce the younger reader to the science of growing plants and their role in the eco-system. In so doing, the book succeeds in engendering a sense of care and responsibility for the environment without being preachy.

Each topic is beautifully illustrated and written in an accessible style. With the help of an adult, it encourages younger readers to explore their natural environment and have a go at growing from seed, whether this is in a garden or on a windowsill. The book would make an absolutely wonderful gift and, like all good children's books, would no doubt be enjoyed by young children and adults alike.
