- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2024My friend Jen is a wonderful book that shows children who live with invisible illnesses such as sickle cell that it's okay to be different. It's very educational to all children and I love the vivid illustrations. Well done!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2017Just what I was looking for. Good for kids, starts with a brief description of what sickle cell is how it affects Jen, but in the end she's just like everyone else, all while rhyming. Only small critique is that I wish it was hard cover to withstand multiple years and multiple reads.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2021Very cute children’s book for understanding sickle cell! Love this for my daughter.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2019My nephew has sickle cell! I bought this book for his classroom ❤️
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2019This was an amazing read and very well written. The pictures and flow of the book kept me wanting to read more. I love how everything was so positive about sickle cell.

I was so excited to get my hands on this book and I was not dissappointed. My friend Jen is very easy to read as the words are simple and the rhyming makes it so much fun! At the same time it educates the reader about a serious matter - and with just enough detail for the younger readers so that it's not too 'heavy'. I cannot wait to share Jen's story with the little ones. Well written!!

A lovely story, easy to read and understand for little ones. This should go a long way to helping them realise that some children are a little special but they do not need to be excluded from activities. I hope that it will help to stop bullying and would love to see other books dealing with other needs. Should be in every school and library.

This is one of my youngest daughter's favourite books. Maybe because she's a fellow sickler, or maybe because she can 'see' herself in the book with a black girl as the main character. Either way, we enjoyed how Leah incorporated information about sickle cell disease without it sounding like a science lesson.

I absolutely love the boom that was gifted to my daughter x
