My GRL Paperback – December 30, 2013
|New from||Used from|
My GRL by John W. Howell is fast-paced thriller that shows how your life can be turned upside down in the blink of an eye. John J. Cannon was looking forward to a long island vacation but instead ended up chasing and hiding from the bad guys. From losing Gerry who he was getting close to calling a friend, to discovering the real truth behind her death, to discovering who Sarah, Gerry's friend really was. It is a well-written story that kept me glued, page after page.

Howell's take on the perspective (first person present) was so interesting that I wasn't sure if I was more fascinated with the story or the stream-of-consciousness approach to writing. Truly, it's a one-of-a-kind find, and not necessarily in a bad way.
The character had personality and spunk: I liked him. He had my loyalty from the beginning. Howell added some definitely unexpected twists and turns, which kept me on my toes and wondering what he'd change next. He had a forward momentum almost the whole time. In regards to the whole book, I can think of only one instance when it felt lagging and slow, and that was due to the descriptions/flow. Howell takes care to describe just about everything :)
What I struggled with was the stream of consciousness. Howell takes care to explain everything, and at points it became very cumbersome (as I mentioned above.) Sometimes I really liked it because it was funny. At other times I felt like he was over explaining things, like rationale behind why something was stated, or explaining something that was obvious to me as a reader. I'm not sure if it's a writing style, or if he just wants to make it overly clear what his intention was.
At any rate, I looked forward to reading this book, enjoyed it while I read it, and continue to look forward to more from Howell. I'll definitely read his books in the future.
But the most appealing characteristic of this novel is its unpredictable plot. From the opening pages on, the reader will be stunned, staggered, flabbergasted, taken aback, and amazed. And there are moments that are almost surreal -- which Cannon’s whole experience must seem to him -- such as when the lead terrorist serves up a five-star gourmet meal to his captives and collaborators. You will not see what’s coming, and that’s the pleasure here.
Maybe most thrillers have this trait, I don’t know, but My GRL was also fun. Despite the serious themes and the white-knuckle action, it’s the humor and cleverness in this novel that make me think I ought to give the genre another shot.
The story commences with a lawyer going on a sabbatical, buying a boat and starting to enjoy a new way of life. Little does he know what these innocent and worthy pursuits are about to bring into his life! I won't give spoilers because a great deal of the pleasure of this book is having the story unfold, but suffice to say the hero finds himself with far more than he bargained for!
The author John W Howell has constructed his thriller very cleverly and created a truly pleasurable reading experience. I found myself suspecting just about everyone of something and being right only about half the time, which is probably in itself one of the marks of a very good thriller.
I do note there is a vague hint at the end of a possible sequel - if so I say bring it on! I'd love to read the next stage of this story! But if that's just wishful thinking on my part I certainly look forward to any other work from this engaging and talented thriller author.
