My issue is with the writing and editing. During the first part of the book, I was confused most of the time about what was happening. It seemed chunky and jumped around. For example, one scene had their teammates talking about how Gareth's girlfriend had left him for a woman. Then there were two paragraphs about how Harry and Carlos traveled to and from the club together every day, and that they would usually eat together. Then it immediately jumped back to Gareth and his girlfriend.
The grammar and typos and ongoing misplaced commas were very annoying and slowed me down in reading and enjoying. Some examples:
"You can you can tell your mom."
"It was just gone midnight, but I didn't stay out late."
"...he wondered how quickly they plan a wedding in Spain."
"...opportunity to breath, ..."
"He'd got closer and closer to Harry"
"...they'll be lots of times in the future sleeping" (instead of "there'll be")
"... get's cold..." The word "get's" was used twice in the book, so I assume it's not a typo. With the apostrophe, she's saying "it's get is cold."
One line, however, gave me a moment of pause as I enjoyed her creativity in saying, "A thin veneer of heterosexuality had to be reapplied at regular intervals." I LOVE it! This is the kind of creativity that makes me sit back for a moment and just enjoy the words.
This is a really good story.
It is a standalone but it is connected to "Home goal" and it is easier to have a full view on the whole situation when You read both books.
This is a love story between two football players, one bisexual and the other deeply closeted. They are total opposites - Carlos is loud, confident and always tries to attract attention, while Harry is a quiet, insecure, shy, virgin who seems more than just slightly paranoid about others finding out he's gay. In the same time they are both fit, sexy and a little bit lonely. It is predictable that they fall for each other but the long way to getting there is interesting and the whole story is really nice.
It is a pleasurable read with interesting and likable characters. There is everything You might want to find in a romance book - sweet love, hot sex, sexy MCs. I appreciate the fact that it was a slow burn and they became friends first.
I really, really like HJ Perry's books with football players and it is a shame she doesn't plan on writing more of them.
I really don’t know much about sports, especially Football (known as Soccer in the U.S.), but that doesn’t matter because this story is really about a relationship and not so much about the sport other than how Gay players are treated. My Goal takes place in 2012-13 with an epilogue set in 2022. This was a compelling story about two men who fall in love with each other but can’t be open about it because of their jobs.
When Carlos is transferred to the team that Harry is on, Harry is terrified that Carlos will remember an encounter they had in their late teens. He avoids Carlos so that he doesn’t have to look him in the eye or talk with him.
Carlos finds Harry enchanting and he manages to worm his way into Harry’s life. Since they live in the same building it wasn’t too difficult to do. Carlos has dated women before but he’s also been attracted to men and he wants Harry.
Carlos and Harry could hardly be more different. Harry prefers to stay in the background while Carlos doesn’t mind being in the spotlight. Carlos chases Harry until he finally catches him. Then the two have to decide how they are going to handle their public and private lives.
I loved everything about this book. Carlos is very considerate of Harry’s feelings but Harry still has trouble understanding what Carlos sees in him. Ms. Perry’s treatment of the subject matter was perfect. Her descriptions of what Harry and Carlos go through were compelling; once I started reading this story I couldn’t put it down.
My Goal is a very romantic and touching story and I’m so glad that I read it. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
