Top customer reviews
The intrigue of the secret identities, the neighborly, family-like love between the islanders and how they look out for each other, the impish little brother Jack, Maude, and the stranger who has unwittingly captured her heart. All come together to create one of the best books I've read in a long time.
Maude is more upset than heartbroken, that her supposed fiance' has come home a married man because her father will not let her run the family inn without a husband. She has to prove to him that she can do it on her own. She must keep him from selling The Winds of Mackinac Inn that has been part of her mother's family for generations, it is her home, it is where her heart belongs.
The book is fast paced, filled with mystery and secrets that abound at every turn. The romance is heartwarming and real. I won't give spoilers in a review. I will highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Historical Christian fiction. I loved this look at life on Mackinac Island in the late 1890's.
Maude Welling, beloved relative of half of the residents of Mackinac Island, nevertheless loses the love of her sweetheart, Greyson, who chooses a wealthy heiress as his bride. Maude is devastated. Not only has she lost her best friend and fiancé, but she is not allowed to run father's inn without being married. Unwilling and unable to leave island, Maude has to devise a way to keep from losing her promised heritage.
Friedrich Konig, a wealthy German,is a summer visitor staying at the Grand Hotel. He piques Maude's interest but is secretive and manipulative.
Pride, greed, lost love, and manipulations abound. Can Maude and others choose to relinquish their own plans and trust in God's? Or will they perpetuate history and be victims of a vengeful, bitter woman long dead?
I loved the view of island life and seeing how the snooty rich lived on the backs of the poor laborers.
I did feel like some loose ends were not tied up, which made me question the ending. However, a sequel may be in the offing, and perhaps those questions will be addressed.
“It’s amazing what can happen when one seeks to do God’s will instead of insisting on one’s own way about things.”
I love historical fiction so this glimpse of Mackinac Island in 1895 was very enjoyable to me. Author Carrie Fancett Pagels has been able to create a novel that combines both real and fictional places and events but she graciously clarifies them in her author's notes at the end of the book. She has woven the places and events of that period into a wonderful story that offers us a glimpse of the social classes of that era, the grieving process of a family who has lost a wife and mother, and the promise of a new life filled with love and devotion. This book offers mystery and intrigue and it reminds us just how much the roles of women have changed in the last century! It also offers readers a glimpse of the beautiful area that so many tourists have visited through the years.
"My Heart Belongs on Mackinaw Island" is great Christian historical fiction and it is a great book for summer reading!
