This delightful anthology fills a long-neglected place in Girl Scout history and lesbian history. Many lesbians learned leadership skills and love for nature, and began to have special feelings about women in the Girl Scouts. Some began to realize that they loved women sexually, but more of them began to have a special emotional bond with other girls and their counselors.
This book, which is reissued with a new introduction and augmented biographies of the contributors, has stories ranging from a rescue that made the camp counselor realize her own strength to a story from later life of a woman who leads wilderness expeditions for women who tells participants right up front that some of them will be lesbians. Sadly, the Girl Scouts required attractions between girls to be hidden, as they were in the rest of society.
Some girls raised the money to pay for camping. One particularly good story tells how girls wanted to go on a canoeing expedition to Canada and raised the money themselves. A few girls who entered the scouts in places where the only activities were indoor crafts weren't happy with their experiences, but it seems that all the ones who had wilderness experiences did.
I hope this neglected aspect of Girl Scout history will be accepted and honored.

Girl Scouting provided the structure for an often chaotic childhood for me. Wherever my mother moved me, Scouting was a rock-solid, stabile influence, especially summer resident camp. I went to camp every year, went through the CIT program and worked at various positions at camp into my mid-30s. It was a liberal upbringing. I learned that everyone is of equal value and importance. I worked at camp with blue hair in 1984, back when people threw things out their car windows at me. But, at camp, and in Scouting in general, I was accepted. And I accepted. Everyone else So, when I saw this book, lesbian or not, I said: these are my people! And they are. Those with good experiences and those with bad, they are my sister Scouts and I embrace them and this book enthusiastically. I highly recommend it to anyone fully immersed in the Scouting experience. (Whether GSUSA endorses it or not!)

Finally a GLBT book that I actually could see myself reflected in! I must have read thirty of them over the last few years. This book had people who had experiences like mine were when I was younger. I was seriously starting to think that I was the ONLY person who had my experiences which were unremarkable and astonishingly normal.
This book was AWESOME. Anyone involved in girl scouting should read it. Everyone should read it. There were some really fantastic and inspiring stories in it, and there were also some really depressing ones as well, as there will be in any book like this. If it were written and just left out the downsides and the bad cases it wouldn't be fair and true.
There were a few places in this book where I actually cried. But what really struck me most was the fact that I could see myself ten years ago IN THESE STORIES. I could actually identify with some of these women. That's never really happened before when I've read other glbt books.
I'm going to treasure this book forever. I actually managed to get an autographed copy when I bought it on amazon. For no extra cost. So very. cool.
Fantastic book!!

This book gives voice to young women who gained acceptance and camaraderie in the Girl Scout Camps throughtout the US. I enjoyed reading about these young women and certainly could relate to their experiences. It is a thoughtful and enjoyable read. Other young women might benefit from knowing that a safe place to be yourself existed years ago and still does to this day.

A collection of memoirs that I give 5 stars to, because of its importance as a cultural and even historical document. Good work by Nancy Manahan pulling the project together and making it HAPPEN!

Boring and terrible writing.

Looks like someone wants to destroy the girl scouts. What parent who read this (or simply saw the title) would ever trust GSA with their daughters? Just another example of a self centered liberal "feminist" expressing themselves in a manner that shows how clueless they are about everyone that doesn't think like them.
