This is the last mission, and it is the hardest and scariest. Ryan and his Navy brothers including his adopted brother finish their military career on a high! What is he going to do now. No job (yet,) no family - except for his brother and sister through adoption. He was adopted by the Keeton's and because of a mistake and complete misunderstanding Ryan is disowned. He is hurt and angry. Then she comes around and he seems more at ease, peaceful almost, and definitely he feels sparks and a raging fire....does she?
She is excited to have her brother and her adoptive brother home from the Navy and the assignments that risk their lives. She is very upset when she pulls out the cake for the homecoming party and her mother only put her "real" brothers name on it. She speaks up and leaves. But she isn't done speaking up for Ryan. No, this veterinarian is a strong and vocal woman. Jacqueline will not be deterred from what is right.
Jacqueline stops by to check on Ryan, partially because her brother asked her to, and partially because it has been 9 long years and she needs to see him. What Ryan has become is a military career man who is arrogant and angry. It is what ends their lunch date when Jacqueline goes to see him that first time. She leaves, after telling him off, and he just lets her go. Neither can seem to get each other out of their heads, but it is now a game of who breaks first.
Ryan rescues a cat, and he is not an animal lover by any means. This cat is a rescue cat that had been at the local shelter for many years. Ryan takes him, and goes right to the vet for a check up....and who might that vet be? Jacqueline calls for Bob, and who does she see when she looks up? None other than Ryan and Bob (of course.) Check up comes back clean, and Ryan has the chance to soften and talk a bit to Jacqueline. Plans start to hatch and hearts start to deepen their feelings.
An emergency call for the vet to make a house call comes in, and without realizing where she is going until she pulls up leaves Jacqueline feeling things she doesn't feel she should, but obviously so does Ryan. This begins the hot and heavy stir between these two. Things are going much better between them. They are keeping this hush-hush for a while until they figure out what is growing super strong between them. Including him saying something right before going to sleep.
Then it happens, Ryan is convinced to go to dinner at the Keeton's. The first meeting in 9 years. It is uncomfortable and awkward to say the least. Then the explosion of blame, hurt, and anger happens. Ryan leaves to cool off, but Jacqueline reveals a secret and her mom and dad and brother find out that the parents kicked Ryan out for something he didn't even do. She also reveals her true feeling for Ryan. He is in the doorway listening while she is speaking her mind, only she didn't know that until she got up to leave. Now the two leave together and stay silent until back at his place.
They talk, and much much more. True feelings are spoken over and over. Skipping ahead a couple of years, things have changed a lot. Ryan has a great job, doing something he loves to do, Jacqueline and he are still together, and he has yet another surprise for her, it is one that has many layers to it.....and it envelopes their past, present and future - all with a happy ever after.
I really enjoyed this read!! I knew Ryan was holding on to the pain, but that there was more to the story. I just never expected what that "more" was! My heart broke for him being estranged from his adoptive family for so long. It broke for Bradley for his failed attempts to get Ryan to come home. I got angry for his initial behavior with Jacqueline, going so far as to mutter "jerk" under my breath while reading. But, the steam between these two was amazing!! So Hot! I was swooning at Ryan and his words and actions toward Jacqueline, going as far as bringing Bob into the picture. (no, not that kind of "bob".) A gesture to get in to her good graces after being so harsh toward her.
Ryan, trying to acclimate back into society after leaving the military, finds himself in a new city and alone. He hasn't seen her in nine years. Not since they kicked him out. Now, she's on his doorstep and she's not the kid he remembers. Not by a long shot.
Jacqueline's brother Bradley, asks her to check in on Ryan since he doesn't live far from her now. Showing up at his front door, she barely recognizes the man standing in front of her as the boy she once knew. He makes her feel things she shouldn't. That they shouldn't. It's wrong. Right?
Highly recommend! I voluntarily read an ARC of this book.
