"My Life as an Extra" is about the power of resilience, what you do after you have been slapped hard by life. It is about finding yourself again, learning to trust your instincts, and follow your passion, regardless of what others might think. And while our heroine keeps looking for love, she is demonstrating that being single is a great thing when it comes to being able to pursue your dreams.
The story is peppered with anecdotes about working on set, about the highs and the lows of being a background actor. The more examples, the more illuminating they were to understand her state of mind. I was rooting for her, the whole time.
Marla Goldberg lives in Chicago and finds herself single at 41, trying to rebuild her life and pursue her dreams. I moved home to Chicago when my husband dumped me in my thirties, and did the same thing. Marla works as an advertising account executive for a radio station. My first job after my divorce was as an admin to ad account execs for an airline magazine company. I almost felt as if I was reading my own biography, except I went back to college to get my degree in writing, while Marla went on movie auditions.
As for Marla’s dating adventures, well we differ quite a bit there. Let’s just say she has a lot more self-esteem than I did. She tries to meet men on line, at church, on blind dates, and even through speed dating. She does meet a guy on a movie set, but… The speed dating cracked me up because Ms. Kaufman is an actress, and she appeared as a speed-dater in a commercial not too long ago. ;-D
In fact, most of My Life as an Extra cracked me up. Choking hazard! Eat first and carve out some time for reading.
I picked up this book after slogging through the Hamilton bio. Kaufman's perky prose kept me turning the pages. I couldn't put this book down and enjoyed ready about Marla's ups and down post divorce as she worked towards her life long dream to become an actress. I was right there with her through bad dates, bad auditions and as she landed her first starring role.
I was truly sad when the book ended and happy to see that Kaufman is working on a follow up novel.
I enjoyed this light read about struggles, hopes and dreams we have all gone through. And real life family dynamics. What do you want to be when you grow up and do you have the courage to do what it takes to get there! A funny insight to being an extra in a movie. Not what I thought it would be.
