I'll admit I only knew about The Planets from a mention on the CBGB's book. This book by Binky Philips was a really interesting and often heartbreaking tale of chasing your dreams and coming up short. With the passion he professes to have for his music serving as fuel, Philips' story is a great reminder of how exhilarating, and fickle, the music business could be, epecially in the 70s.
I look forward to hearing his music someday, and reading more of his tales.

Home run! Binky Philips hits one out of the park with this book. I've been impatiently waiting for him to publish a long format work ever since I began reading his Huff Post pieces - which should definitely be made available as a collection (hint). I devoured this in one sitting, in fact I literally couldn't put it down. Binky really knows how to engage his readers, writing in a humorous, taut style that kept me enthralled. As for the subject matter, I was right there in the CBGB trenches, and there isn't a single observation or characterization that isn't spot on. I give it my highest recommendation. Keep 'em coming Binky!

I am told there is a glitch that is being worked on, that once corrected will allow all Kindle owners to download the book. Please don't give this book a 1 star review and punish the author for Amazon's mistake.

Luckily, I was able to download this to MY PHONE. I don't do a lot of heavy reading on MY PHONE, but this was a short tale. It was entertaining, and Binky has a nice tongue-in-cheek conversational style. This dude was on the verge of 'making it' so many times, but everything happens for a reason and he is not bitter about any of it. A good, fun read for YOUR PHONE.

Yes, definitely don't take out your frustrations for these technical issues on the book itself by giving it a poor rating. It's a fantastic story about what it was like to grow up in Brooklyn, NY when the real greats of rock were new...including the explosion of the punk rock movement. You'll feel like you're right there in the story because Philips pulls you in so well. ReKindled (if you'll excuse the pun) my passion for the music just by reading the first few pages. Now I'm pulling out old records!

Philip's story is filled of brushes with the giants, successes and disappointments, and toeing the line (aerobatically, in some spots) between self-glorification and self deprevation, until it's much more than just a cautionary tale for those dreaming of rock-star status. While most would-be rockers reach for the brass ring (although some of us--myself included--were too lazy to even reach), Binky rode the ride several times, feeling the texture on his fingers, pulling at it's weight, only to have it recoil time and time again. But even more, it fills that gap in so many "History of Rock" chronicles; the dusty tomes that end with Woodstock, Altamont, and the Beatles breakup fade out to fade in to the Bee Gees and "Jive Talkin'", when many a farm boy like myself had to make due with "rock" that felt at home in a D&D tournament, or pop borrowing generously from such "legends" as the Partridge Family and the Carpenters, eventually just giving in and listening, comatose, to the barrage of disco on the FM radio in my father's Electra. Here is an insiders view of the rumblings that would create glam, glimmer, punk and New Wave, and Philips puts you on the ground floor, weaving an intricate pattern of love, lust, adventure, heroes, villians, and the dangers of wearing nail polish while making use of public transportation. One suggestion? A companion mp3 offering, that the reader may enjoy the music being described. I'd buy that!

This is a compelling story told by an excellent writer with a sense of humor and wit. It describes a time and place in rock music that will drag you in--even if you're not a rocker by nature.

It's not without sadness (How I Didn't Make It), but it's an absolutely fascinating view of the events of the 60's and 70's in the NYC local rock scene.

Do not pass this one up.

Now that all the hub-bub over who can and can't download this free (AHEM, FREE) book is over, let's talk about what's inside, what do you say?

It's funny, sad, touching, hilarious, and compelling. You won't put it down until you finish, and once you do, you'll want to hear what The Planets sounded like. Binky paints vivid pictures of the mid-70s NYC scene in all its filthy, dilapidated glory.

Five stars and when's the sequel?

For everyone else who left one-star reviews, perhaps it's time to edit those a bit?
