Editorial Reviews

Review

There are plenty of valuable lessons and real consequences in this novel that people should pay close attention to. This story also shows how making the wrong choices early in life can have a dramatic impact on one's future. My Life Is A Movie is an edgy, cautionary tale that will keep you glued to the pages until the very end! David L. has once again penned a novel that is thought-provoking and entertaining!! --Urban Reviews.com

About the Author

David L. is the President and CEO of Total Package Publications, an independently-run publishing company which specializes in unique, refreshing plots and storylines. His first novel, Over Your Dead Body has been received with critical acclaim and multiple awards and has been optioned for a movie deal with a Los Angeles-based independent film company. Over Your Dead Body accurately details the unfortunate occurrences of separation, followed by divorce and forces every married couple to look in the mirror and ask themselves the question: Is My Marriage In Trouble? It is by no means to glorify separation and divorce, instead, to highlight a cautionary tale of what could happen if one allows their relationship to get to the point where there is no turning back. David L. also released Chalk Outline Confessions in the spring of 2008 and has been receiving numerous nominations for its ability to capture the realism and graphic display of the suspense and thriller African-American genre. His most recent release, My Life Is A Movie was released in early 2009.

I enjoyed reading this book. I'm promised that I will reading one of David L.'s books. I choose to read My Life is a Movie. The main character is Kayla Brown. My Life is a movie is dealing with emotion, youth, struggling, rape, self-esteem, and peer pressure. This is my first time to reading from David L.
This book is hard for me to read because there is something wrong with Kayla.

Likes:
I like the concept and vibe in this book. David L did a good job. Tamika, Donovan and Arden are good friend to Kayla.

Dislikes:
Kayla Brown is a good young and intelligent woman but she decides to choose the opposite direction and choice the wrong men in her life. She is struggling in school and her family. Ellis is not good man to her because he is disrespected to Kayla Brown. Dickie is wrong for shooting at Donovan because over the dice game.

Sorry:

I'm sorry to hear about what's happen to Donovan and Kayla.

So far, this book is really good to rear. David L. takes his to writing in this book. I choose 10.5 stars because this author and book deserve 10.5 starts. It's really sad and emotion because Donovon doesn't deserve to get shot over the dumb dice games. I'm looking forward to read another book from this author.

Good Job:
Sandra

Amazing book from start to finish. This is one of those stories that you wish you could get at least several teenagers to read to get an understanding of adulthood and how short term decisions can turn into long term consequences. It hit on different levels that, although I have not experienced any of this, but it is liable to happen and there have been times that I have been hard-headed at a young age deal with boys, friends, and preparing for what life has in store. I was kept on the edge of my seat every step of the way and it did not let me down. Two thumbs up all the way on this!!

17 year-old Kayla Brown thinks she's the finest female at Tiden High School. Her favorite quote, "If I don't love me then who will?" Tamika has been best friends with Kayla since first grade and even though it is clear that they are very different they remain friends.
As well as the usual high school drama, Kayla also has drama at home where she is very observant with all that goes on around her.
Kayla's mother and father have been separated for five years but she is well aware that daddy still comes around for a booty call, something her mother eagerly puts up with hoping that daddy will eventually come home. Kayla is the youngest and has a couple of older brothers who have their own problems.

The drama kicks off when Kayla meets Ellis an older guy who she starts dating. But nobody really seems to like him but Kayla is smitten with him...and she soon starts to alienate her friends. When Ellis shows his horrible true colors will she have anyone to turn to?

Tamika holds what God gave her as something precious she must hold onto until the time is right, much to the dismay of her horny star football player boyfriend Donavon. But this couple is about to face a twisted turn of events that will affect their lives and having them second guessing themselves.

This story showcases real drama and problems some young people might face. The question is will teenagers open up to someone for help when they need it? It was pretty sad to see the way Kayla handled her situation and even more so with the fact she had teachers and parents around her who had no clue what was going on with her. Why? Because she starred in her own movie thinking she had complete control over her life, but ultimately she found out the hard way!

This story started a little slow for me, but managed to draw me in as the author vividly unfolded the major scenes.

I was pleasantly surprised with this novel. I was thrust right into the story line and brought back to my youth remembering how hard peer-pressure was growing up. How it seemed double hard being a female trying to find my way in the world. I am sure all can relate to this coming of age novel and will be reminiscing about some of the situations they par took in as a youth. I think that author David L. had all the emotions of the female characters down to a tee. While I only have daughters, I imagine that what the males go though is precisely conveyed also.

Kayla Brown is the main character and we follow her as she deals with day-to-day struggles with school, boyfriends, and family issues. Kayla believes the sun rises and sets on her. The decisions she makes affects not only her but also those around her.

Tamika is Kayla's best friend. She has her head on straight and a plan for her life. Tamika is the voice of reason for Kayla. These two are thick as thieves and different in every way imaginable but their bond is solid.

Donavon is the star football player and boyfriend of Tamika. Donavon has a plan and the plan includes going pro after college and marrying Tamika. The females love that Donovan is a star football player. See how Donavon and Tamika deal with his rising stardom.

As I read this, I was hoping that every teenager could get a hold of this book. I could not help thinking about the old saying my mother used to say to me "A hard a** make for a soft behind". The lessons in this book are those we all learned growing up. The choices we make will affect us for the rest of lives. As teenagers, we all reached a point where we thought we were grown and that is the point that these kids are in this book. We follow along and see how their choices play out. I look forward to reading more from this talented author in the near future.
