Product Description
Immerse yourself in this sunny; uplifting romantic comedy starring Oscar nominee Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) and Academy Award winner Richard Dreyfuss. Vardalos delivers a charming performance as Georgia; a recently laid-off though anything but laid-back history professor-turned-travel guide to a motley crew of hilariously crass tourists. Georgia is fed up and ready to give up until her new confidant Irv (Dreyfuss) opens her eyes and heart to a simple fact: There's no finer way for a woman to find her kefi (a.k.a. mojo) than to lose herself in the arms of the "Greek god" (Alexis Georgoulis) who's been hiding right under her nose!

The combination of the appealing Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) and the breathtaking location shooting in Greece make My Life in Ruins the perfect film escape. The film works as a feather-light romantic comedy, with Vardalos's character, Georgia, facing burnout in her job with a cut-rate tour company in Greece. Georgia knows there's magic in the Greek countryside and history, yet the grind of her job has drained her. Happily for Georgia, her latest group of semi-challenging tourists will help her shed some of her hard-built personal armor, guiding her to cut loose as the tour progresses (a journey mirrored in Vardalos's hairstyle, which starts out prim, and ends up attractively tousled). The strong supporting cast includes Richard Dreyfus--seeming very comfortable playing an old coot--Rachel Dratch, Rita Wilson, and the dreamy Greek actor Alexis Georgoulis, a bus driver with the soul of a poet. And possibly a secret crush on the oblivious Georgia. But the true star of the film is Greece itself, from the coastline to the mountains, from the Acropolis to the Parthenon. That so few American films are shot on location makes this summer treat even more appealing--as sweet as fresh baklava. --A.T. Hurley

My Life in Ruins is supposed to be a light-hearted, romantic comedy about a jaded tour guide who rediscovers the magic of living by the people in her tour but...to be honest, this was not remotely as good as I thought it'd be. And somewhat of a let down. It was, at times cheesy, but I think that was actually intentional, which is unfortunate. It was rather slow and plodding. There was a plot, beginning and end, but it lacked any originality in every way.
More surprising, I found Georgia rude, snarky, and unlikable for half the movie, and while she does wake up and learns to embrace her life as it is, in ruins, it comes a little too late for me. Group B is eccentric and slowly come together as a family of sorts that really never felt that authentic or genuine or natural even though the cast tried to give the script and their restricted character development some depth. I think the worst thing was that the cast of characters were all stereotypes, which I get why producers/writers do this when you have such a large cast but why anyone still thinks that's funny is beyond me. The love/romance was...random, not well developed, and not at all romantic; in fact, it could have been left out entirely. The comedy aspect was not that funny either, almost half-hearted and limply executed. The ending is predictable, but the whole movie was predictable so...
Along with the stunning Greek scenery and sites, Richard Dreyfus as Irv, a symbolic representative of the 'Greek magic' and soul of the tour group, was the only good thing about the movie but he and the beautiful scenery can't save a story that has no real spirit or charm. Maybe this is one of those movies you have to be in just the 'right mood' in order to get anything out of it but if you're thinking how great My Big Fat Greek Wedding was and how wonderful Nia Vardalos was in that movie--you're not getting that in this very so-so, predictable, and somewhat unenjoyable movie.
Richard Dreyfuss was great in this and definitely carried the movie with his quality acting and character portrayal. The love interest was definitely handsome and likeable. Enjoyed it once again on a 'what to watch that will make me feel good?' kind of evening.
Third, my Aunt married a first-generation Greek, my Uncle Pete. Whenever he and my wife get together, half the conversation is in Greek, and the other half in giggles and laughs - and if anything is on the tube, it's likely one of Nia Vardalos's hits!
