Using the simple format of an ABC book, they'll discover the what and why of what they see on Sunday morning. "What are those robes the pastor wears? What are those parts of the service called?" The text is detailed but easy and accessible and the illustrations will certainly grab the little ones' attention. And in the course of it all, Pr. Mize preaches the Gospel to them - the free forgiveness of their sins for the sake of Jesus' death and resurrection.
Highly recommended for your children, grandchildren, Sunday School, Christian preschool, dayschool, and/or daycare.
When I first received my copy, I gathered my children together for our evening devotion, and began with letter "A." We were getting ready to move, so the house was a bit chaotic. But in the midst of chaos, there was the liturgy, as it began to be taught. After only a few pages, even the little ones were trying to predict what term would come next. Sometimes they would guess correctly. Other times, Pastor Mize would surprise them. For example, one child thought "C" would be "Confirmation," a likely choice. But when "Chasuble" was presented, this only provided additional opportunity to learn. So, in my experience, the book encourages conversation and growth even beyond its own content. How wonderful!
I immediately purchased three copies: one for my family, one for the congregation I had formerly served, and one for the congregation I am currently serving. Maybe I'll be able to get enough of them to give this book as a gift to new parents as they anticipate the joyful arrival of their first child.
Thank you, Pastor Mize, for providing this gift to the Church!
I appreciated the emphases very much. Now, I might quibble that C could have been crucifix rather than chasuble and D could have been doxology rather than deacon, but this is another tool on my bookshelf for raising my children in the faith and with appreciation for the church. And X? The X is priceless. Worth purchasing the book just for that!
The visuals are appealing for their proclamation. I really appreciated the clarity with which “Given and shed for you” repeats throughout the book. Also the crucifix.
If you know what the Te Deum is, this book is for you and your little loved ones.
This book will help my children hear the Gospel again and again, while learning visual and hymnic reminders of it. Yay for age-appropriate theology!
Pastor Mize, thank you for this gift to the church. I look forward to reading more from you and your family.
