STEPHEN T. JOHNSON’s inventive children’s books explore a wide range of subject matter and concepts that stimulate playful yet profoundly rich engagement through words, art and ideas. He is the recipient of a Caldecott Honor, two New York Times Best Illustrated book of the Year awards, three ALA Notables, two Gold and two Silver medals from the Society of Illustrators in New York City, and the 2004 Governor’s Art Award for Individual Artist by former Kansas Governor, Kathleen Sebelius.

His drawings and paintings are in numerous private collections including those of musician Paul Simon and actress Cherry Jones, and in the permanent collections of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, the New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut, and the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. Among his public art is a 66-foot mosaic mural at the DeKalb Avenue Subway Station in Brooklyn, New York, a 58-foot mosaic mural at the Universal City Metro Station in Los Angeles, California, and 33 glass panels for the Dallas Love Field Airport, in Dallas, Texas.

lots of toys and games were opened but the entire gaggle of 6 year old girls surrounded the birthday girl and this book and they remained glued in that huddle around this book for the rest of the party... begging to try on each ring or tiara or whatever appeared on the next page... by the end they each had something on and were begging their parents for a book like that of their own....

This was a total surprise. I found out about this through Barney's NY, where it was sold out. I bought this as a Valentine's gift for my 7 year old and 4 year old nieces. Thee 7 year old absolutely loved it. It is a simple story with an interactive surprise on every page. Each page contains a different cardboard cut out that a princess must have for her purse - the perfumes are scratch and sniff, the quill actually writes and the glasses, mirror and fan can all be used more than once. Sturdy construction but more importantly a story that ends with an important message for young girls.

I would caution that the cardboard cuts are a little difficult to take out. A great way to spend time with your cherished little one..

LOVE LOVE LOVE! My only complaint is I can't get my 4 year old daughter to stop asking me to read this with her!!! She absolutely loves it and we bought another one for a friend's 4 year old birthday and it was as big a hit for her! VERY cute. It is not much of a story but the different activities are fun! Definitely not something that a younger child could probably play with herself though - as I'd be afraid of losing pieces or tearing them - but as long as you are "reading" it with them, younger ones would probably enjoy it too. . It's definitely a hit at our house!

It's super cool with all of its interactive pieces .... rings, a mirror, tiara, letters, etc. On every page something pulls out for her to look at or try on. She has looked at this book a million times and she still loves it. I will say, my daughter is six years old ... I am not sure with the little pieces that it would be good for much younger kids. Toddlers might put the pieces in their mouths or bend the pieces trying to get them in and out. I wouldn't purchase for anyone younger than 4. But it's a wonderful, very cool book!
