On My Own.But Never Alone

On my own...is a very difficult album in the sense that it tries to combine many different styles, which is not a bad thing. However, some of the songs remind me very much of Euro-Dance music of the 90s that just does not speak to me at all. Some of the ballads - and I hate to say it - sound a bit cheesy. Where Miss you so or No tears anymore are ballads that have some depth, the ballads on this album do not even come close.
Her voice is wonderful, there is no question about it. The arrangements though are somewhat irritating. In comparison her latest CD Hymns (with guitars and I love it!!) seems to be something that finally shows HER style.
That she continues not widely known stateside may be attributable to our own cultural rot and insipidity in these shores. Lory may be just too big and, let's say, 'operatic'. She conjures and inspires emotions and vistas that are very cinematic, huge and unapologetically romantic, and how well do these mesh with a populace immersed in deconstruction, Tarantin-oid cynisicm and general slackerdom??? We don't have permission to feel the things that Lory's voice offers anymore, and that is sad, sad, sad.
This self-produced CD has its moments, for sure: "The Greatest Love" was worth the price of admission. I only wish some savvy LA-based whiz kid, or a DownTempo turntablist rummaging about in the more tasty sections of LoungeLand would grab Lory and produce her. For that matter, I'd even settle for the ultra-sheen of Whitney's producers, although I find Whitney quasi-corporate and alternately soul-less. A little more attention to brevity and craft would have put this CD over the top and Lory into FM Land. Lory on her own can sometimes exhaust certain colors, but man, does she use those colors. When she sings, you see the SUN.
If you can get your hands on Lory's 1993 CD, "Lonely is the Night", do so.Read more ›

Lory, formerly known as Bonnie Bianco, finally has a CD that she did all by herself. No trendy poptunes in the style of everyone, but true Lory. You will have to get used to it. Read morePublished on April 18, 2003 by Sinitta
