High capacity small footprint

This is a high capacity external hard drive. The drive measures 4.25”x3.25”x0.75” and weighs 255 gm (9 oz). It comes with a 15” USB C to USB C data/power cable as well as a USB C to USB 3 A adapter. It comes formatted and ready to use and pre-loaded with WD Discovery software for Windows or Mac. The drive is an active hard drive (not SSD), powered through the USB cable; no additional power cable is required. The WD Discovery software allows you to set up auto backup options, password protection, import cloud images and documents for Facebook, Instragra, Dropbox, OneDrive, GoogleDrive, etc. WD recommends this drive for Windows 10, 8.1, or 7 (they have a Mac version for Macs, although it is possible to set this drive to use on Macs as well). You also have the option of not installing the WD Discovery software if you don’t need it. The product comes backed with a 3 year warranty.

I am very impressed with this drive. As a photographer, I need high capacity back-up drives, and I regularly fill big ones like this 4 Tb drive. It has a transfer speed of 5 Gbps when using a USB 3 connection. The disk runs at 5400 rpm, slow for a disk that you use for constant data storage and retrieval, but acceptable for backup storage. This drive has the smallest form factor that I have seen for an external 4 Tb drive, making it easier to carry around and store. Since it is an active drive with moving disks, you do need to treat it with care, protecting it from bumps and drops, especially when running. Basically, before plugging it in, make sure it is in a safe, secure place where it won’t be knocked or dropped. I’ve experienced a lot of disk crashes, and over time, I’ve found that WD drives have been more reliable and less prone to crashing than other brands that I have tried. Overall, this is a smooth running, high capacity storage drive that is easy to use and should provide years of service.

Reliable, rippingly fast, and this is now my 4th Passport Ultra...

I have 6 brands of backup external hard drives. I've had nothing but problems with the ruggedized Transcends; and every Seagate I have is frustratingly slow and not always recognized on any given drive. But the Western Digital My Passport Ultras -- I've had them in constant use for 3 years, and they have not failed me yet. Last month, I ordered 2 more of the newest model. I could say they work great (because they do), but what I really should say is that they work great and are rippingly fast. This last archive took 1/2 the time it does on the older Passport drives, and 1/5 the time it takes on the Seagates. It's not just the USB 3, either. The old-gen Passports are also USB 3.0. Also, I have USB 3 on several backup media, and their transfer speed is consistent. These new-gen Passports are just really fast. To drop from 15 hours to 3 compared to other brands? Or from 5+ hrs to 3 on the new gens? Either way, i's an impressive improvement, and frees up the system (and me) for more work. It makes backup a chore, but not a full business day loss.

The Passport drives also have built-in security if you want to use it, from password protection to encryption. I feel more comfortable with my data on these drives than on my primary system.

I almost hate to say it, because it might jinx me in a world where a 25% fail rate seems to be acceptable to Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, and the rest of them, but... WD has earned my customer loyalty. This is a very good, reliable product that holds my data without failure and works for years. Also -- and not to be underestimated -- the WD privacy policy actually allows you to opt out of just about all typical data mining for ads, marketing, and "tailoring" of the internet to your click stream. This is a company that actually seems to work for the customer, not just put out a good product.

Considering that much of our lives/livelihoods are now captured in digital, a reliable backup and/or archive drive is critical. These are the best external HDs I've used over the years. All in all, I am very pleased. When I need new media again, I'll be looking at WD's My Passports first.

Hard drive failed after a month

This hard drive failed after a month with no physical damage.
It was kept in a soft bag and was handled with care and still just stopped working.
A data recovery company wanted $1,450 to perform a level 3 recovery of my data.
I learned my lesson and set up a NAS server for backup in my home.
Needless to say, i will not be buying WD hard drives in the future.

Don’t Load WD Software = All Good

As others have pointed out, it works well out of the box, but then seems to hiccup with the Mac OS. I turned off the WD sleep feature as another user suggested and it seemed to help for the next backup. Then the same error message popped up after another backup attempt. I looked through WD’s website and did not find any help. Found an Apple support message that suggested that any sort of disc control, anti virus, or other similar type of third party app / utility might hinder the auto backup features of Time Machine. So I uninstalled all of WD’s apps and it seems to be doing backups without any issue for a solid week now.

Bottom line is this is a reasonably priced, reasonably looking external hard drive for time machine to use. Just let the Mac OS be in control and don’t bother with the WD apps / utilities.

A warning to new buyers

Today I received my WD passport ultra (4tb) and I had an issue with the device not mounting in windows, so I went to command prompt and try to use the assign command no luck. So I went to disk management and found that the drive was not formatted to ntfs like the description said, so I formatted the drive and I accidentally formatted my old dying hard drive where I was supposed to move my files from. I restored all my files by using filezilla and recuva and waisted alot of my time. I expect more from Western digital as a customer ever since 2008, and I expect a plug and play experience from when I open the package. The drive itself is nice in the hand and is really quiet during operation. The drive speed is ok but not mind blowing like an external SSD. The story I just told is a good lesson that you should watch out what you're formatting (also WD needs better quality control).

Although not major, but I have seen tiny glitches while copying data into it. I have not used it for long (bought it 3 months back) and hence I would recommend this to be your 2nd back-up drive :)

I have 3 WD My Passport Ultra 4TB – Micro B and I was looking to backup my 3D Animation projects to an external hard drive in the 4TB - 8TB range equipped with USB-C technology.

This Hard Drive has an insane 4TB of space and is so tiny you can easily carry it in your pocket and forget that it's there.
The sleek and metallic body has a hefty feel to it despite its slim profile, rubber bottom provides a reliable grip to surfaces.
• Plenty of speed, lots of capacity, cross-compatible to all your favourite systems and consoles.
• Backups are quick and allows some extra security for your files.
• USB-C port and cable – with an adaptor provided to cover those with USB Type-A PCs and laptops.

3.6 TB. The wire is terrible quality, very disappointing.

First of all NOT 4 TB only 3.6 TB, which means 10% of what I paid for is not there. But that's how it is here in Europe for some sad reason?
Second, the wire itself is a terrible quality, it looks like it has been laying in a hot windowsill for years, and there is no flexibility in it.
Third, the socket in the hard disk feel shaky and does not fit very well.
And last, the wire is not just <USB to WD plug<, its >WD plug to WD plug, plus USB adaptor< (see pictures).
Who was the one who came up with that idea, does it even fit anything else then WD or is it only to look like it can be practical, thou it is not. A normal USB wire is not small, sitting on the side of a laptob, but this thing is ridicules.
And its very noisy, it sound like a constant helicopter in the distance.

3 Years Warranty, USB-C type connector, Tactile Feel

I don't normally leave reviews but I am pleasantly surprised by the tactile feel and built quality of this portable hard drive. It has a nice anodized metal top that is nice to the touch with a plastic base. Overall it is a nice design.

The main reason I bought this drive is the 3 years warranty, compared to the 2 years on the WD Elements. At the time of writing this this drive was £93.50 and the Elements was £84 so the £10 difference for me was worth paying for the 1 year extra Warranty.
I have included a photo of the box that shows the 3 year warranty, as well WD website confirms it. I do not see it mentioned on the item’s description on Amazon which is a missed marketing opportunity for this product because it is one of the main features that separates it from the WD Elements, that clearly shows 2 years on its box.

Another advantage of this hard disc is the USB Type C connector. If you use this on a wide array of newer phones and slimmer devices that are starting more and more to have this connection. Buying a drive with this connector helps somewhat future proof your device. Who knows what slim device you may wish to hook this up to in a year or two. It thankfully also comes with an adapter that connects to USB 3. However, I wish WD had included a lead at least 1.5 times the length it is very short, and one of the few negatives I can think of regarding this product.

Again, for me the main reason I paid the £10 extra for this item over the cheaper WD 4TB Elements, is the extra 1 year warranty. I often travel, or move the data around to different locations. I am always concerned regarding mechanical drives when they get banged around or moved or thrown about in a bag on a bus or Tube. For me the extra year of warrant is worth the added cost. Your needs may vary and the extra cost may put some people off.

By the Way, do not Buy this drive if you intend to ‘shrunk’ it. Also known as breaking it out of the plastic case, because according to my friend the USB power interface is soldered directly onto the drive, and you can’t use it as an internal drive as there is no way to connect it to the Sata cable. I looked around at some videos on Youtube that confirmed a lot of WD 2.5inch drives are like this. I can not confirm it myself though, as breaking it open would Void the warranty and that was my main reason for purchase.

Interferes with 2.4GHz wifi (MacBook Pro)

If you run 2.4GHz wireless this will interfere with the connection to a point that you will most likely not be able to connect with your wifi while using this hard drive. This is due to the USB 3.0 interfering with the 2.4GHz bands.

A bummer as I really like this hard drive, but it's a really big inconvenience not being able to go online while using it.
