"McCrae shares the joy and heartbreak of filming the penguins. ... With beautiful descriptions of the stark landscape, harsh weather conditions, challenges of filming, and isolation during the dark Antarctica winter, this work lovingly and accurately details emperor penguin behavior in an engaging memoir that will appeal to wildlife enthusiasts, adventurers, and armchair travelers." -- Library Journal

I am a penguin-a-holic, and loved the beautiful pictures. I wish McCrae was a better writer--I didn't think anyone could make as exciting an adventure as he obviously experienced so pedestrian in print.

Didn’t get through it. Too much about the author’s personal details and not enough about penguins. Perhaps my poor review is because I have recently read several histories of the Antarctica explorers and his “struggles” seemed whiney and petty by comparison.

Loved it, just fascinating, thought it would be a little boring and tedious but he brings such brilliance to a love of life, as well as his penguins. Smooth writing and wonderful stories and flew past the pages. Learned so much and just love those crazy penguins!

Wonderful book, perfect Christmas gift

After watching Dynasties series my favourite episode being the one with the penguins I couldn't wait to get this book, what a wonderful book it is, the photography is amazing and the way it's written makes you feel like you are there. This talanted, dedicated, detirmined young man is a real asset to the BBC, I'd far rather see his work on my TV screen than some of the other over paid talentless BBC staff and rubbish programmes produced.

fascinating account of a year spent observing an emperor penguin colony
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 9, 2020Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this account of the cinematographer and author Lindsay McCrae's year in Antarctica filming the lives of an emperor penguin colony. For me the strongest parts of the book were the accounts of the penguins, the unbelievable hardships they endure, and the remarkable bond between the male and female pairs. The illustrations, of which there are many are very bit as stunning as you might expect.
Life in Antartica is not life as we know and the author has captured this well, in what is an engrossing book

Definitely worth reading.

Bought this as I wanted something different to read. So glad I did. The writing is excellent and I found myself actually putting myself in the author's shoes and understanding every emotion he was going through both on leaving for Antarctica and on returning home. His time there he describes so vividly I felt and wished I was there with him. The book made me smile and made me sad in some places. Lindsay really loves the penguins and its so evident from his writing. I looked this up on YouTube just for an even better understanding and it was just as he described. A superb book and I was actually sad when I had finished reading. One thing that stood out for me was the penguins were battling the weather and not man unlike for example in Lawrence Anthony's books where men are responsible for the death of many elephants and rhino's. My penguin year is in my opinion a truly brilliant and moving book.
