Gr 9 Up—This standalone alternate history novel inserts teenaged aspiring author Charlotte Brontë into the world of her own making (with the addition of ghosts) as she chronicles the life of her best friend at Lowood, Jane Eyre, as inspiration for her first novel. Charlotte's authorial ambitions and Jane's plans to become a governess are thwarted when Jane's ability to see ghosts comes to the attention of Alexander Blackwood, an agent for the once-prestigious Society for the Relocation of Wayward Spirits. Determined to help his mentor restore the Society to its past glory, Alexander is keen to recruit Ms. Eyre as an agent—even if it means taking off his ever-present mask and accepting help from the overly eager Ms. Brontë and her screw-up brother. This simple task spirals into a madcap story of ghosts, possession, revenge, and murder as Charlotte, Jane, and Alexander must set aside their differences to solve the mysteries of Thornfield Hall, help the Society (and the ghosts), and maybe even save the King of England in the process. Narrated by Charlotte, Jane, and Alexander, this novel uses Jane Eyre as a loose framework. It humorously blends fact with fiction and offers a gentler, more hopeful outcome for Charlotte, her siblings, and her heroine. VERDICT A must-read for fans of My Lady Jane or Jane Eyre and a fun alternative for fans of paranormal romances.—Emma Carbone, Brooklyn Public Library
★ “Holds all the flavor of a juicy period novel yet with the addition of numerous, witty asides. Full of wry humor and laugh-out-loud commentary. The authors’ affection for their source material is abundantly clear in this clever, romantic farce.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))
★ “A delightfully deadpan deconstruction of a Gothic novel, with a ghost almost no one can see providing the commentary. Marvelously self-aware and almost too clever for its own good.” (Booklist (starred review))
★ “A madcap story of ghosts, possession, revenge, and murder. Humorously blends fact with fiction and offers a gentler, more hopeful outcome for Charlotte, her siblings, and her heroine.” (School Library Journal (starred review))
“Reader, it delighted. A fun, supernatural mashup of different literary novels that shines on its own merit.” (Kirkus Reviews)
PRAISE FOR MY LADY JANE: ★ “Wacky, irreverent, and just plain fun. This fantasy-adventure politely tips its hat to history before joyfully punting it out of the way. An utter delight.” (Booklist (starred review))
★ “An uproarious historical fantasy that’s not to be missed.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))
“Gleefully anachronistic comedy.” (Kirkus Reviews)
“Three cheers for this well-written and rollicking revision of history full of timely mannerisms and bold adventure. Those who enjoy clever humor, colorful fantasy, and light romance will savor each page.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))

In this version there is a mysterious society looking to free ghosts from their earthly bonds, the Brontë siblings heavily featuring Charlotte, and a ghost named Helen. Written in a style very similar to The Princess Bride, this book has a lot of Easter eggs! Look for references to Scooby-Doo, Harry Potter, and The Princess Bride!
My only complaints and reason this book did not get 5 stars is the constant references to how old Rochester was. Being someone who generally attracted to older men it really became quite bothersome. In that same vein, the ending is quite different. For me the ending of Jane Eyre is the whole purpose for reading the book.
This book is recommended for teens on up. For my friends who don’t like the occasional ghost story, this book would not be for you. Otherwise it’s quite fun and laugh-out-loud funny!
Lady Janies, I promise that if we would ever have the opportunity to meet, we would be instant best friends because you are each of the race of Joseph.
I LOVE attempting to figure out the references to pop culture that you include in your stories!!! I think there should be an app for your readers to attempt to share the references--the page numbers and specific references would be a must! I can't believe it took me so long to get the LORD OF THE RINGS reference! I'm so embarrassed! ;) lol!!!!
~The Lady Janies, My Plain Jane (Dedication)
My Plain Jane is a Jane Eyre meets Ghostbusters retelling of the classic novel, and true to form, it is witty, fun and captivating. I think my best piece of advice before you go in to this book is to remember that it is a retelling, therefore it IS a different story. While filled with the same characters and basic plot points of Jane Eyre, My Plain Jane takes you on an incredibly imaginative journey, full of the twists and turns of an entirely new tale.
Because of this, I truly think that this book will appeal to those who love Jane Eyre and to those who don’t. If you love Jane Eyre, you can once again join these characters on a new journey while revisiting the beautiful aspects of the classic story that we all know and love. If you don’t love Jane Eyre, well...like I said, it’s a new journey, and I think this story will appeal to you with its new twists and witty parenthetical asides. Written in true Lady Janie fashion, this book will not only take you on an incredible ride, but will also include you, as the reader, each step of the way. I loved reading all the classic lines from the original story in a new way, and getting to be a part of Charlotte Brontë’s journey of writing her beloved classic novel. I also loved returning to the feel of the gothic novel and watching each twist and turn play out in a unique way. I truly enjoyed this book!
Congrats to the Lady Janies on the release of another incredible story!
I really enjoyed this book. Going into I wasn't really sure what to expect because I didn't think I that I knew the original story of Jane Eyre. But slowly released I had at least the basics, thanks to catching a movie edition on TV one time. And I don't know how similar it was to the original, but it did give me the important parts I believe. Once I realized I knew the tale I was nervous to continue this read. Even though I know the Lady Janies aim to rewrite stories for a happy ending that it SHOULD have.
The Lady Janies totally nailed this story and made me fall for this story of Jane Eyre! The character growth was great, especially for Jane and Charlotte. It was interesting to see how they matured and learned about themselves throughout the story.
One thing I loved (but also kind of questioned) was some references to well loved pop culture. There were a few reference that confused me but overall, always fun!
The story also had plenty of little surprise that I enjoyed. And ending that made me mostly happy for everyone involved!
