** SPOILERS **
Mitch and Skylar meet when they're kids at 10 and 11 but after a few months Mitch has to move away. Then she sees him at a party when they're 15 and 16. They become friends again but Mitch refuses to be more than friends because he's afraid to screw it up after growing up with his parents and their problems. Sick of all the girls he dated she went on a date with someone where Mitch follows and jealously makes him kiss her. He still tries to fight it but after awhile admits to her that he wants them to try for something more only to have her tell him she has Hodgkins Lymphoma and is moving to New York to her Dad to get treated.
After nearly two years of only seeing each other on weekends, Skylar is in remission and is back home Shortly afterwards she finds out Mitch got a full ride to Boston University that he declines because she just got back. She makes him go and they get to see each other periodically. She finds out that due to her high dose of chemotherapy it destroys her eggs so she'll have a hard time conceiving and a higher chance of miscarriage. Knowing Mitch wants kids and afraid he'll grow to hate her, she breaks up with him.
After graduating high school she interns at a design firm in Manhattan. During that time she meets a girl named Charisma and Skylar ends up hooking up with her friend's cousin and gives him her virginity. But taking advice from her closer friend she realizes that she should've told Mitch the truth about the likelihood of being infertile. She calls him only to find out they are in each other's cities, declares her love. She admits she slept with someone and asks him if he has only to find out at one of the two girls is Charisma. Knowing that Mitch loves Skylar she devised a plan to keep them apart . . . hence befriending Skylar. Charisma also tampers with the Mitch's condoms and becomes pregnant and Skylar can't handle it and leaves.
Five years later Skylar moves back with her fiance Kevin whom she doesn't love but feels safe that he won't emotionally hurt her. After running into Skylar at the store, Mitch starts watching her house from his car, until he has car problems and accidentally calls attention to himself. Shocked that he's there, Skylar invited him in and talk finding out that after his son Henry was born, Charisma bailed because Henry had autism. After that night Skylar and Mitch will occasionally meet for dinner and one night stopping at his house, Skylar unintentionally meets Henry and is charmed by him. She also finds out the Mitch hasn't touched a woman in 5 years after the Charisma incident.
Knowing that she's also attracted to him, Mitch and his friend Davey devise a plan to have her decorate a house he's building in Virginia so he can woo her away from Kevin. After some hesitation she agrees but before leaving finds out Kevin got a promotion and that it's in California. In the evenings after working on the project, they hang out and Skylar fights to resist him. When she tells him about the move to CA, Mitch declares all bets off and uses everything he can to have her leave Kevin and stay with him. On the final night they're in Virginia, Skylar realizes that she's not happy with Kevin and sleeps with Mitch intending to break it off with Kevin when she returns home. Kevin however has been spying on them and knows they are together. They break up and Skylar and Mitch start their life together. I like that Mitch wasn't quite a manslut and had only slept with a couple girls before seeing Skylar when they were teenager and only a couple girls after Skylar broke up with him in college.
The tears. good lord, the tears. How much heartbreak and loss can you handle? If you’re in the mood to ugly cry, grab a box of tissues, move away from people and get ready to let the feels take over.
I hate cheating books. I hate love triangles. I hate. I hate. I hate. They make me all angsty-faced and queasy and put me on edge in a bad-uncomfortable way and I usually avoid them like the plague. So, I was really unbelievably nervous about this book – I shouldn’t have been.
I hated what’s-his-face from the start. No really. He doesn’t get a name here. When we dive into the book, Skylar’s living with That Guy Who Makes Her Feel Safe and Mitch is sort of stalking her. We later find out why he’s channeling his inner Christian Grey and it’s not nearly as creepy as you’d think.
I am in awe of Mitch. I loved every single piece of him. I loved his stalkerish ways, his loyalty, his weeping orgasms, his backwards Yankee hat, and the way that he looks at Skylar. I loved it all. Skylar is one incredibly tough girl. However, as she ages she loses a bit of her strength and I hated that for her. It’s like the cancer sucked that sass and spark right out of her. I wanted her to fight for Mitch. I was heartbroken and devastated when she didn’t.
But not to worry, as I said before, Mitch is perfection. He’s dominant without being overbearing and sensitive without being weak. He suffers through so much and he never.ever.failed.me. If you haven’t yet noticed, I may love Mitch. My Skylar is a serious sexual simmer that rages into an inferno as soon as the plot allows it. OHMYGOD.
At the end I was a ball of mixed emotions, so turned on and yet crying wildly. I’ll just be over here wiping the tears from my chin. Loved this book!
I'll admit to skimming parts of the story because in the modern day things were moving slow here and there. I kind of expected there to be bigger issues between the two main characters. In the end to me it felt like a whole series of poor communication and missed chances. Plus they started awfully young which I always have trouble identifying with.
I think too that if the modern day relationship between our heroine and her current lover wasn't so obviously wrong then I probably would have been a little more engaged. She struggled but lets be real you put those two men up against each other there was no question how that was going end. I mean all these books end nicely but that was glaringly obvious from the get go so it was like going through the motions until she finally had a happy ending.
