The story starts with his mom sneaking in his window to take him on an adventure to see the world... an adventure to see the world that starts with his mom sneaking him out through a window? Well, obviously, she has to. She's a secret agent robot ninja warrior according to her son. I don't know what his dad, her ex-husband thinks because he doesn't want her in the house, hence the window entrance. Terrance's adventure while being, according to the police, kidnapped by a crackpot parent is touching, exciting, and fun. I was able to fit together the other side of the story, the adult side of the story that we read through the filter, the point of view of Terrance and it made sense, was exciting, interesting, and it had an innocence that was refreshing to read.
It's a quick read and it left me wanting more. I'd like to hear the original story that led to his mom dashing off the first time. It's R.A. Desilets' debut novel and I look forward to more.
Desilets has a (annoying ;) knack for setting you up. I felt that just as I knew what was going to happen next, she threw in just enough to make me question my prediction only to come back and show me that she was messing with my head all along.
All in all I would love to see more about the world in which this story takes place. Sounds amazing!
My Summer Vacation with Terrance Wade is an interesting read about a vacation that a boy takes with his mother. It moves at a nice pace and the characters are intriguing. There was an air of mystery to the story that was quite fun. This is because the story is told from the point of view of 7-year-old, Terrance, as a school assignment about his summer vacation. As an adult, I can tell that his mom is taking him without permission since there are cops involved and she sneaks him out of a window, but to Terrance it is all part of a grand adventure with his mom the Super Agent Ninja Robot.
Terrance repeatedly says he knows his mom isn't crazy so he is making up things to have them make sense. It is a very funny ride. I enjoyed jumping into the mind of a 7-year-old and the innocence of him thinking that his mother could take on the world. I like hearing about diabeetles and his mom's 'eat your spinach' look.
It's a very short read and I usually prefer longer books that are in a series.
My favorite parts of this story are the prologue and the epilogue (you'd have to read for that to really make sense). It is a nice, funny, short story about a boy who saves the world while seeing a situation in a completely different light than what it is.
This is a really cute story that pulls you in quickly and leaves you scratching your head at times when you realize that you might not really know what's going on, even if you think you do. Terrance is written adorably and you really feel like you know him quite well as you read this story. You also get to know Terrance's mother and you learn a lot about her from his point of view. She's not crazy! He makes that very clear!
I'm not really sure what I could say about this story without giving something away. I'll simply say that this story is a fun trip taken through the mind of a child and one that I would recommend for all ages. It's a great journey to take!
