In My Time: A Personal and Political Memoir Paperback – May 15, 2012
Purchase options and add-ons
In his enlightening and provocative memoir—a stately page-turner with flashes of surprising humor, remarkable candor, and powerful resonance—former Vice President Dick Cheney takes readers through his experiences as family man, policymaker, businessman, and politician during years that shaped our collective history.
Eyewitness to events at the highest levels, Dick Cheney brings to life scenes from past and present: He chronicles his coming-of-age as a high school athlete in Casper, Wyoming, and courting homecoming queen Lynn Vincent, his future wife. He describes driving through the White House gates just hours after the 1974 resignation of Richard Nixon, to manage the Ford transition. He portrays his response to the national crisis of 9/11, when he conveyed orders from the White House bunker to shoot down a hijacked airliner if it would not divert. And he reveals how his political vision has endured through his extraordinary ascent to the heights of American public life as:
* The youngest White House Chief of Staff, under President Gerald Ford
* Congressman from Wyoming who worked closely with President Ronald Reagan
* Secretary of defense under George H. W. Bush, overseeing the U.S. military during Operation Desert Storm and the resolution of the Cold War
* CEO of the international Fortune 500 company Halliburton
* The first U.S. vice president to serve out his term of office in the twenty-first century. Working with George W. Bush from the onset of the global war on terror, he was—and remains—an outspoken proponent of taking every step necessary to defend the nation.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2011Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI wasn't sure whether I would like this book as I read the sample. It seemed interesting - although dry - but I yawned at the idea of learning about Dick Cheney's childhood and various other personal details. Still, I felt that Cheney is a man who has had a pivotal role in our history so I decided I would give the book a try. I expected to basically scan the book and somewhat doubted I would finish it. Oh, how wrong I was!
If Cheney hadn't told us about his childhood and youth, we wouldn't have been able to understand his life view and values. He poignantly tells us personal and family stories that are key to our really understanding exactly who DIck Cheney is, but he did not over do it. He quickly became a real person to me, not some 2-D cardboard character as portrayed in the media. He clearly is a man who loves his family, his friends and his country. He is a highly intelligent and fiercely loyal man who does not suffer fools quietly (usually). Even though he did not plan a career in politics, it is apparent that politics was a perfect fit for him.
I loved reading about behind the scenes negotiations and slowly it began to dawn on me how essential networking with the main players is to a successful administration. As much as many of us - including me - like the idea of a Washington "outsider" coming in and shaking up the system, Cheney vividly demonstrates how having solid long-term relationships with people in critical positions can make the difference in the success or failure of a policy, plan or piece of legislation. Reading about the various crises that constantly had to be handled by the White House, it became clear that a potential president has to be someone who can make competent decisions regarding complex issues in ALL areas, ranging from finances to social programs to international security and foreign policy. If the President has no experience in foreign policy, how can s/he possibly deal effectively with a flare up overseas that demands our immediate response? I was overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of all that is involved in making crucial decisions. Having the right people in key positions is crucial. And how can you know a person is the right one until he or she is in the position?
This book was an eye-opener when it came to the ways that people within an administration can quickly - or over an extended period - undermine critical goals of a President. There are many examples of people who overstepped their boundaries and - presumably inadvertently - became obstacles to the goals set by the President. Some gave personal opinions to the media stated as if they were the views of the White House when in fact they were not. Sensitive details about policies still in the making would be leaked in an effort to push an agenda that was not that of the White House. It is frightening to know how much damage can be done by people that are either inept or misguided. There are eye-opening revelations about Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell, and others in positions close to the President that will make you question your long-held images of them. You will understand Cheney's faith in Donald Rumsfield. You will get why Cheney felt that some people in key positions had been essentially abandoned (e.g. Scooter Libby, intelligence officers). Time and again, Cheney is a lonely voice as he urges the President to hold firm and stick with politically unpopular policies when it is clear that they are in the best interest of our nation. You might disagree with some - or all - of Cheney's analyses but you will hear him ferociously defend his positions with facts and reason and you will come to admire him for staying true to what he believes is best for our nation regardless of what the latest poll numbers say. If the President went with an option contrary to what Cheney felt was best, he would accept the President's decision as opposed to trying to undermine it. I believe the world is a safer place because of Cheney's influence but I feel that we would be in an even better place if his ideas on negotiations with North Korea and other volatile countries had prevailed over the continuous concessions and "deals" the State Department insisted were the way to go.
I have read many other books concerning politics and various political figures, including Bush's book. None came close to this one. This book fascinated me, scared me, encouraged me, discouraged me, made me proud, made me ashamed. I read - not scanned - every single page. I can honestly say that Dick Cheney is a true hero. Our country desperately NEEDS a Dick Cheney - his intelligence, experience, integrity and clarity. And oh my, we need his ability to stay the course even when the going gets tough, always putting the focus on what is best for this country, particularly in terms of national security. I like George Bush and believe he thought he was making the best decisions he could for our country. But I wish that Cheney had been President with Bush holding a subordinate role. Cheney's intelligence and the clarity with which he could see through complex situations clearly made him a better man for the job.
I thank Dick Cheney for writing this. And I thank Dick Cheney for his years of public service and devotion to our country while remaining a loving husband, father and grandfather. Dick Cheney for President? I only wish...
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2011Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseHistory can be a very strange subject. First of all, it is written by the victors, secondly time has a strange effect on history. Harry Truman was vilified during his years as President. When he left the White House on January 20, 1953 there was no one to say good bye to him. Arriving at Union Station for the long train trip back to Independence, Missouri there were no crowds, no bands. America was glad to be rid of him and welcome Ike into their arms. As it was then, perhaps is how it is now. A half century later Truman is lauded for making extraordinary decisions with neither the experience nor the advice of his predecessor. It is the subject of numerous revisionist biographies.
Dick Cheney and President Bush have taken tremendous heat from just about everybody who holds both of them accountable for what seems like some poor decision making although history will have something to say about that. The lens through which we see history has a strange way of changing the facts and the conclusions, once the distance brought by time goes into effect and it will be the same for Vice President Cheney. We don't know if history will be kind or angry with the Vice President, we do know it will be different.
In his book "In Our Time", the Vice President gives his side of the story. Like all biography it is both self-serving, and overly complementary. Let us make no mistake about it, you expect bias in an autobiography as opposed to the pen of an historian, and so let us begin. This is the story of an extraordinary American who has led an extraordinary life experiencing world changing events first hand where he had influence. Having been a player in many of these same events I can attest that Dick Cheney is one of the smartest men to occupy public life in the last half century. I have seen him in action. The mind is razor sharp, his decision making capacity is unparalleled, and he has an innate ability to work through a problem in lightening speed, cutting right to the chase. Few men can stand with him, let alone match him, and then there's the influence.
At the same time we must recognized that such comments have been said about others such as Robert McNamara, Clark Clifford, McGeorge Bundy, and all of them got their Presidents into trouble as well, namely Kennedy and Johnson. "In My Time" lays out 40 years of service to his country. The book gives us 519 pages of narrative outlined in sixteen chapters. Cheney has appropriately begun Chapter I with Beginnings, and finishes the book with Chapter 16 Endings. The entire book evokes emotion in the reader. You are in the arena, feeling the heat, and watching the story unfold in front of you.
He covers everything that he feels is pertinent to getting his story out there. For me the chapters dealing with him becoming the youngest Chief of Staff to a President (Ford) in history are absolutely instrumental to understanding all consequent events in his life. For it is here that he forms a strong friendship and working relationship with a young Donald Rumsfeld, and a now retired General Brent Scowcroft. It is Scowcroft who has never received credit for perhaps being the indispensible player among the three of them for 40 years.
These three men, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Scowcroft would together as a team render tremendous service to their country in several administrations and make history together. It is interesting to note that it is only when Scowcroft is missing from the three advisors during George W. Bush's administration that things seem to go awry. During the Bush I administration, it is Scowcroft who warns the first President Bush, beware of invading Baghdad, once in, you may not get out. During the Bush II administration, it is Scowcroft, now an outsider who urges Cheney to re-think this invasion of Iraq. It is Scowcroft who tells his friends, "Dick has changed." None of us understood it at the time.
It is Cheney on the inside who squelches all outside opinion and advice, and determines that once the course is set - STAY THE COURSE. It's all here and more. The book speaks for itself. You will read the story for yourself from his side of the table, and it is a fascinating read. Cheney did not write this book in his own hand. It is obvious that Liz Cheney who knows the Vice-President as well as anyone had a very big hand in the actual writing of this book, and that's okay. It is Cheney's thinking, and his personality that comes through the book. You feel what he feels as he is feeling it. You understand the process he is going through to make decisions, and see those feelings and decisions filtered through a politically conservative philosophy that has evolved for the Vice President over a lifetime of being in the arena.
Whether it is discussing being Secretary of Defense during the Bush I Administration in Chapter V, "Mr. Secretary", or "Liberating Iraq" in Chapter XII, the book is hard hitting, blunt, and takes no prisoners as demonstrated in the language the author employs. Some people will be upset by Cheney's bluntness on many topics including many of his assessments of the President he served for 8 years, and why not. This book is not about the Vice-President making a couple of million dollars. What he took out of Halliburton as CEO (Chapter VIII) "Out of the Arena" assured him that he would never have to work again.
Each of us as a reader will look to draw different things from a book like this. Some of us will find our needs wanting, and some will be more than fulfilled. In my case, I am a reader, and I required a book like this to help me get the other side of the story. Not what comes through a grossly distorting press on both sides, but a story from a guy who was actually there, making things happen. Since there are always other contemporaneous historical accounts of the same events, we are all free to interpret and weave the real story together, because we will never get it from any one book, nor should we as readers expect it.
We are getting Cheney's version of the unvarnished truth as he sees it, and that's a very good thing. He comes right at you the reader. It is his voice all right. It is his personality, his tone, his temperament. The Vice President retains all of his former brilliance that was displayed throughout his four decades of service. His discussion of 9/11 will more than convince you of that.
CONCLUSION
The most important concept I took out of a book like this is the actual operation of the wheels of government. How was Bush II different from Bush I (answer very)? How was Ford different from both of them? Why was Cheney not a principal player in the Reagan Administration? Why did Bush endear himself to Cheney during the Vice-Presidential Search period and why was Cheney chosen as Bush's Vice President. What was it like to sit at the epicenter of the action of so many history altering events, and finally what about regrets? Did Dick Cheney have regrets about the decisions, the advice, and the influence he wielded? Was there a dark side? I will not discuss his answers but it is in the book, and I urge you to read this wonderful narrative. Like Dick Cheney or dislike him, there is no one in the middle on this man, and thank you for reading this review.

Amazon CustomerReviewed in Germany on May 21, 20135.0 out of 5 stars Ein politisches Leben in Amerika
Michael P. MaciukReviewed in Canada on September 22, 20115.0 out of 5 stars IN MY TIME
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseMy review is restricted to the contents of the book and not of Vice-President Dick Cheney. "In My Time" is well written and it is obvious from the amount of detail, dates, times and names, that a substantial amount of research, preparation and thought went into writing this book.
The prologue starts off with September 11, 2001, and gives the reader an insight as to what really transpired in the White House, Congress, The Capitol and with the President of the United States during 911. Chapter One is titled "Beginnings" and provides the reader with a front window view of the Vice-President's childhood, his parents, his roots, his upbringing and education etc.
This book also affords the reader to opportunity see how Vice-President Dick Cheney first commenced his career in government, his relationships with former Presidents, Vice-Presidents and government officials. The reader also gets to see his involvement in Desert Shield, Desert Storm, the liberation of Iraq and how he worked his way up the chain of command in the government.
Vice-President Cheney also gives the reader a view behind the veiled curtain as to how he was as a White House Chief of Staff, Congressman, Secretary of Defense, advisor and confidant to Presidents and high ranking government officials and appointees. You also read about his employment as a newspaper delivery boy, as a partner of Bradly Woods and Company and CEO of Halliburton. It was very interesting to read his take on Watergate and his relationships with both Bush Presidents, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, Ronald Regan, Don Rumsfeld and his take on Iraq, North Korea, Valerie Plame, CIA and Cabinet Appointees. You really receive a first hand education as to the true working of the United States Government and it's many departments.
Yes, the book contains plenty of photographs and most dispel the image that he was shrouded in secrecy, mysterious by nature and very underhanded. In the pictures you actually see a proud husband, father, grandfather, politician, confidant, advisor, Vice-President and statesman.
I believe that Vice-President Dick Cheney attempted to portray a true and accurate depiction of his four decade career in government, politics and private life. I also believe that he was forthcoming with his information, details of events and opinions about incidents and individuals. I also believe that Vice-President Cheney did not attempt to sugar coat many of the contraversial issues and told it straight up and without bending the truth. Being a Canadian and often looking at the U.S political scene from the outside, this book actually filled in many blanks and cleared up many misconceptions relating to politics, decisions, actions and people. I recommend this book if you have a hunger for knowledge and the inner workings of Washington D.C. politics and it's players.
Adrian J. SmithReviewed in the United Kingdom on August 29, 20155.0 out of 5 stars A memoir that stands tall amongst it's peers
Out of all the recent political memoirs, Cheney's book stands very tall. The strength of the work is it's all inclusive nature of covering every aspect of his involvement in government, without digressing too much into reasoning, and pondering, like certain other memoirs do (eg Decision Points). Rather, Cheney keeps solidly to the point, and keeps the pace very lively, making the book a true page turner.
The structure of the book is also in a pretty straightforward, chronological narrative. It does open with a retelling of his experience of 9/11, but after that teaser introduction, he pretty much follows a chronological account of his life, from childhood in Nebraska and later Wyoming, to college days and dropping out of Yale, to success in Academia, and eventually to his first job in Washington, working in the Office of Economic Opportunity under a then Congressman from Illinois by the name of Donald Rumsfeld.
The true start of his career was under Rumsfeld, who was vital in getting Cheney into a job in the Ford Administration, as Deputy Chief of Staff, and later full Chief of Staff when Rumsfeld left that role to head the Pentagon for the first time.
Cheney also covers his time in Congress, perhaps the least interesting chapter, but the pace really picks up when he is appointed Defense Secretary under Bush I, and oversees Desert Storm.
While the recounting of his days as Vice President may be the most interesting part of the book, particularly for those who most vividly remember that period of history, a strength of the book is how Cheney gives pretty much equal attention to all periods of his life.
The book is not so strong on ideology. Cheney does not hide or disguise his beliefs or positions, but many may expect some kind of ultra conservative field manual, which really isn't the case.
Rather, he simply gives his reasoning behind many of his foreign policy positions, positions that were shared by many people at the time (oh the convenience of amnesia) and how the US was to react to 9/11.
There really is not anything in this book that smacks of insanity, delusion, or any of the attributes given to the absurd, cartoon character the popular imagination had made of Cheney. Indeed, the only part of the book that made this reader somewhat incredulous was his description of Guantanamo Bay as "a model facility."
Furthermore, although Cheney was widely believed to be The Power Behind the Throne, this really is not the case. He recalls how George W Bush overruled him, sidelined his views, or simply ignored him, indeed with much frustration on part of Cheney when he refused to grant a full pardon to Scooter Libby.
Dick Cheney is NOT a far right ideologue, nor a devious behind the scenes manipulator, he is simply an ordinary guy like you or me, who was smart enough to carve out an outstanding career in public service in some truly extraordinary times. As such, it is an incredible story, and an incredibly memoir.

Still making my way through, but this is a well written, engaging read. While I am a right of centre politically, I dont cant say I agree with all of Cheney's positions, however he is a facinating and very talented character from an extremely interesting period in worldwide politics.
