Another crippled product from MyGica

I gotta get used to the fact that Asian gizmos manufacturing really enjoys crippling their product beyond their expected usable range. Take for example this MyGica "HD" TV Box. It has all the core features for High Definition, EXCEPT that is missing one really important feature: The only way to feed this thing with a consumer High Definition video source (Blu-ray, High Def. Gaming console, digital cable TV, etc.) is by a Component (YPbPr) input that can only be plugged into the MyGica TV Box through a proprietary YPbPr-9-pin converter cable that is NOT PROVIDED. You read right. It requires a proprietary (MyGica only) cable that they deliberately omit. You will have to book a plane to mainland China to buy this obscure adapter, otherwise, the only HD source you can feed it if through your VGA (PC) input cable. Big deal. Every other source can only come from crippled Composite (NOT component) 480i (Standard Definition) RCA input or the now obsoleted 576i S-Video (not even near 720p).

Or you can buy a second MyGica Box, the "Game Box" model that DOES have the aforementioned High Definition cable, but without a remote control and NO TV tuner. When joining the two together (at nearly 40 bucks each) you will end up with a single TV Box that does what is intended. And a throwaway single Game Box with no remote, no tuner and no HD cable.

The "HD" feature in this MyGica TV Box is like buying a really fast Ferrari car that can only go past 65 mph when fed exclusively with special fuel that you can only buy at a special Ferrari-owned gas station... in Italy!

Good way to get basic cable through my projector

I recently bought a great little Epson PowerLite Home Cinema projector and mounted it on my ceiling. The HDMI link to my Blu Ray player is excellent. The projector has several different inputs, but it is simply not cable ready. I originally went looking for a stand-alone cable box with an RCA (yellow round plug) output, but I found there are more boxes like this one with VGA outputs that are designed to turn a CRT or LCD computer monitor into a cable-ready TV. Since most projectors have VGA inputs, this serves the need, albeit with a fatter, more expensive cable. This device ships with a decent, short one.

By the way, don't for a minute think you will get good image quality because this is a VGA "computer" cable. It's still analog information, which is decent enough for analog TV. Get the $35 HDMI cable instead of just about any other kind if both ends support it. The quality gap between them is huge.

The remote is a little tricky. I should probably read the manual on how to change channels, because touching any number key instantly takes you to that channel, which is great if you only have up to channel 9. I just use the channel up/down buttons. I don't like the slow response to changing channels.

The main benefit for me is that this was a really simple, low-cost way to get basic cable TV without having to pay an extra $5 a month to lease the cable company's big box.

I bought a new desktop PC with a Blu-ray drive and couldn't play Blu-ray disks because I had an analog 22" monitor without dvi or high-def connections. I don't have enough room for 2 monitors, so I didn't know what to do with the analog one after I bought a new monitor. I didn't want to trash a perfectly good monitor, nor did I want to try and sell it and get just a few dollars for it. So when I found this tuner box, I decided to give it a try. Well, it took some time to figure out how to hook it up, but once I figured it out, it works about as well as can be expected considering the video feed is not hi-def or even S-video. But at least I'm getting more use out of the monitor and I can finally get rid of the old 75 lb. 20" Sony CRT TV it replaced.
I was able to connect the tuner box to my satellite box (an older, non-high def unit) with the red, white and yellow cords and then use a vga connector cord from the tuner to the monitor. The picture is adequate and the tuner box is small enough that it's not too intrusive. Also, I connected a pair of amplified computer speakers to the tuner box and the sound is fine through those. It would be fair to say that this tuner box did exactly what I hoped it would do--that is, turn a decent monitor into a TV. I would give it 5 stars if the design of the unit was better (there are cords on both the front and back of it) and if the instructions were clearer, and if it was just a bit less expensive. I can also say that if you have an old monitor lying around that you can't bear to part with but otherwise have no use for, then this tuner is an option. Also, you don't need satellite or cable to receive channels. You can also use rabbit ears to receive broadcasts, but I can't comment on that since I hooked it up to my satellite box.

Bad picture, VGA in does not work

I purchased this item so i could watch cable TV on my projector. I connected all cables and the unit fired up right away. The picture however, is like watching TV on a set from the early 1980's. Its blurry and the colors are really bad. It seems they could have improved the software as well too. When you choose a resolution ranging from 800x600 to 1920x1200 it immediately sets the new resolution without giving a 15 second test to see if your display is compatible. I accidentally hit a resolution that was beyond what my projector could do and was left without a reset button or a clue as to how to fix it. It took me about an hour to go through the menu using the remote in the blind to finally find the option that sets the resolution back to factory. I did log on to the manufactures web site and the only support number is some 818 number that turned out to be someones google voice account. I have spent a lot of time trying to improve the picture and fix the VGA in but to no avail. The company, "MyGica" took the time - instead of improving this product - to add "Snack Game" to the OSD. Snack Game is a a spoof off the old Nokia cell phone game "Snake". Stupid thing to have on a tuner box.
This is a very low quality product, in fact its the worse item Ive ever bought on Amazon. I do not recommend it.I game it 2 stars because it game me something to fiddle with on my day off.
Oh, Picture In Picture function does not work either.
