Gesture Control Armband

How did you come up with the idea for this product?

Building on work in the area of wearable technology that two of us (Matthew and Stephen) had done previously, the idea for the Myo armband was born out of fundamental question: How do we connect the real and the digital worlds as we move towards wearable and ubiquitous computing?

What makes your product special?

"With the Myo armband, we have made advances in technology to demonstrate the possibilities of interacting with digital devices without the use of touch, voice, or cameras. Today, the Myo armband can be used as a controller for home automation and entertainment, to seamlessly replace presentation remotes, to interact with video games and heads up displays in a natural and intuitive way, as a tool for controlling robotic devices and toys, and much more."

What has been the best part of your startup experience?

Getting the chance to work on technology that we’re truly passionate about. Even before we settled on working on Myo, the three of us had already decided that, upon graduation, we would start a technology company in some form, rather than taking a job or pursuing further studies. It was a risk, but we get to wake up every day and work on some of the coolest technology we can imagine, alongside an amazing team of people. There really isn't anything else we'd rather be doing.

I would recommend this to anyone in a presentation setting who is familiar with technology. I teach World History and use the Myo primarily to swipe through keynote presentations. I have used it for Netflix and iTunes as well.

I wear the band only halfway up my arm because I can rest it comfortably in this position. Because I put it on this way, I had to make a custom profile instead of using their gestures. I actually preferred setting my own because I didn't have to make the motion quite the same as they want you to.

As far as usability and control, the Myo is great if you understand you need to wear it a good 3 or 4 minutes before trying to use it. It's also still new (hasn't even been out a year yet), so of course its occasionally going to get the wrong read or miss a command. I would say the accuracy of the Myo is around 95% or so. It doesn't miss many gestures, but it's yet perfect.

As long as someone understands the current limitations to the device, they should get plenty of enjoyment and usefulness out of it. If you're looking to put it on your arm and immediately control any and everything with 100% perfect accuracy, then you might want to keep waiting.

This is a great device but it isn't ready for prime time quite yet. Not out of the box anyways. I would like to talk about my experiences with myo as I've owned it since november of last year. First myo I received was dead so I had to rma it. Then finally a myo that works had arrived. At the time the software was very limited and there were a few things one could do, but it wasn't very efficient. But I had the developer's package so I expected such. As time progressed the software became better and better. And then something magical happened. I found out a program made by Bitshift Interactive called the "Mapper for Myo" (I am paid absolutely nothing for this). I was on the fence about buying it. I mean 25 bucks for software on top of the armband is asking for a lot. However, I went ahead and bought it because it promised a very customizable experience. This is when the magic started. After the update in march, this device became much more useful. Suddenly, I felt like I had the force. I was able to create profiles for a lot of things that didn't have a profile before and that with 0 programming required. And yes, there are still 6 poses (though the company does plan to release a custom pose creator in the future). There are countless ways to modify those poses though. This is what made this magical. I could make a fist, then twist my fist or raise my arm in order to do something. I have been able to use myo to play games, use it for music, video and whatever else I desired. And the cool part about it, is it is still in early development stages. I am always active in the community because I see this as a future that we can behold today. It is a really exciting path. Now for those who want to purchase this product, let me give you the cons and pros that I have found.Read more ›

This thing is pretty cool, and keeps getting cooler. The dev team behind it is quite active, adding functionality often. It takes a bit to get used to, and there are still some quirks, but almost everything is configurable through a simple GUI, so you don't need a dev background to put limiters on The Force. My amputee friends from the military love that this technology is being developed on a more commercial basis, and hope that use of such devices will not remain a novelty, but become mainstream. I have to admit, I'm almost to the point in Outlook where reading my email with this thing is faster than my keyboard. Which means it's almost ready for mainstream. I think the price tag is worth it, and I think the configurability from the GUI allows anyone to really love this thing within a few minutes of putting it on. I have to say, it was a cool reaction I got in my first meeting where I made a fist and a blue pointer showed up on the wall screen to underscore the service flow I was trying to demonstrate. I was wearing a long-sleeved shirt, so everyone was looking for a device attached to my computer, and couldn't. It was great.

I've had my Myo for a few weeks now and I would recommend it for technology enthusiasts. The out of the box setup required some additional calibration for me but once that was completed the response was quite accurate. I was up and running in about 5 minutes.

Like any ground-breaking technology, use cases take time to evolve, but I bought it with that mindset and have continually found more day-to-day use for the product. I would not purchase this if you are looking to completely lose your mouse/keyboard/remote control. But it does change your typical peripheral interactions over time -- in a very fun way.

I look forward to seeing more connectors come through and discovering more and more ways to integrate the Myo into my work and personal life.

This is a really neat device. the instructions are easy to follow, though not entirely intuitive. wish it would use built in bluetooth instead of hogging a port on the computer, but works perfectly with my Nexus 6. Now it just needs better integration, more apps etc.

Pros: looks neat, very few false positives after calibration, fits snug (maybe a bit too snug - see cons), seems to charge pretty quickly and lasts quite a while. the instructional videos are quite helpful, and feedback appears to be accessible on their site.

Cons: leaves a Myo temporary tattoo when removed, goes away after about an hour or two. only a handful (get it?) of gestures and apps are supported. I'd expect if some good developers pick this up we'll see many more. unintentional gestures fire a lot of false positives if you don't calibrate (e.g.stretching your hand after using the mouse, tapping your hand on the desk, etc.)

Amazon! why is this an amazon exclusive and not integrated into Amazon Music? Forcing me to go back to google music to play around with the gestures.
