Please be aware that you must have a Mac that is capable of running OS9 and or Classic. That means the "newest" Mac machine you run this game on must be be a PPC (Power PC) G5 operating Tiger (OSX 10.4). The "oldest" Mac machines you can run these games on goes back fifteen years. (note that Exile runs native in OSX and does not require Classic)
I HAVE NOT! TESTED EXILE ON A PPC MAC RUNNING OSX 10.5 LEOPARD. (not certain if it will work)
What is good about this version of these games is that the original versions had some troubles running under OSX Classic, they would be sluggish and fragmented and unstable.
I installed the 10th Anniversary Edition and all three games have ran flawlessly and smoothly.
One of the troubles with the older versions of these games is that they were written in a time when CD drives were running at 48x speed or greater. The invention of the Superdrive slowed things down considerably.
I am not going to tell you how to get around this problem but I can tell you that a fairly new and fast DVD drive is a bonus.
This version of Myst is quite nice since hints and a map is included as well as solutions. This is very nice for Myst beginners but can spoil the game. (some noticeable improvements in graphic quality are also present, especially in Riven)
Bottom line, If you have a machine capable of running the Myst games, this is an excellent version to purchase. (Windows 98-XP) (non Intel Macs OS8.1-OS9.2-OSX 10.4 Tiger)
Keeping that old computer around can provide MANY hours of fun with these games. (you can also buy obsolete computers very cheap these days, I would suggest a Mac G3 minimum)
One issue that some people may worry about is compatibility with Windows Vista. This will run fine on Windows XP or a Mac as far as I can tell. I had to struggle with it a little until I figured out the trick. Since I think everyone should play these games, if you have Vista and want this to run:
1. Install the game normally (I installed them one at a time).
2. Uninstall any Quicktime version that is on your computer. It is free to get Quicktime off the internet so you can get it afterwards. This game uses Quicktime as a major component, and newer versions of Quicktime just don't really work.
3. Install the Quicktime that comes with the DVD for each respective game (Quicktime 6.__, I believe).
4. Run the game. You do NOT need to run it in compatibility mode, as it will give errors if you do.
Another word of advice: Save often. These games are a little unstable, though I had a minimal amount of problems. They are still very much playable, and WELL WORTH THE MONEY!
If you are having trouble with the Myst games at first, just keep at it. Unraveling the mysteries and puzzles and exploring this beautiful world is such a reward for a little frustration and confusion. Experiment too, because each game has a few endings (only one is the -right- ending, but you can see the other cinematics too - save often!).
The images are stunning (especially considering when these were made), the puzzles are engaging, the soundtrack is FANTASTIC, and the storyline twists and turns in intriguing ways. If you have the chance, I recommend listening to the game with headphones, because it is a lot more immersive. I literally had a shiver run up my spine during certain parts because of the music.
If you enjoy these games, I would recommend the rest of the Myst games as well, though I have not gotten to Uru yet (but have heard great things about it).
I hope that my review was helpful. Enjoy!
It is a pleasure to once again waste many pleasant hours playing these games that were so far ahead of their time.
