Ending on a startling note, this surprisingly existential novel reveals a darker side to the author's genius.

This long-overlooked work appears here as Mark Twain intended it and replaces the bogus 1916 edition published by Albert Bigelow Paine, which relied on the first, instead of the final, draft, deleted one-fourth of the words, added a character, and misrepresented the ending. In addition, for the first time in the Mark Twain Library edition, a glossary of printer's terms is featured along with expert notes and commentary.

Wrong version, fraudulent book. Buyer beware!

This edition of this book, with the green and gray cover, published by Classic Books International, is NOT the same version as the Kindle edition it is linked to. Buy the copy that has the cream and green cover and is published by the University of California Press, the cover shown in the Kindle edition of the book. This is an egregious mistake on the part of the Amazon site. The two versions are very different, with many different characters and a different setting.I told a help desk person 2 months ago but this has not yet been remedied. DO NOT BUY THIS EDITION IF YOU WANT TO READ THE AUTHORIZED VERSION OF THIS BOOK!

Twain's book, written late in life, reveals his cynicism about society and humanity. No. 44 is also a mind-bender because some of the concepts it explores are very complex. It's rather different from his more famous works; if you're looking for something like Adventures of Tom Sawyer or Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, this book may not be for you. Although No. 44 does include some of Twain's trademark humor, it's also quite dark. I found myself feeling rather depressed at the end of this novel, but I did enjoy certain instances of Twain's wit--such as his comments about cats. Overall, No. 44 gives you an interesting glimpse into Twain's mind. Just remember that it's dark in there!

The Mysterious Stranger published soon after Twain's death was an attempt at making a quick profit by rewriting some incomplete manuscript pages. On the other hand, THIS version -- No. 44 -- was painstakingly pieced together over the course of many years by Twain scholars. The result is a manuscript that is closer in tone and theme to Twain's other later work. I also believe No. 44 to be more fully coherent than the previous version.

I recall watching a claymation depicted version of this Mark Twain story. Having the text is nice. Overall, this is an essential story to have if you are interested in theological themes in literature. Also if you are interested in Twain's impact on American Literature. Epic.

Easily THE standout of Mark Twain's writings. This edition (the only true edition) differs very much from the modified version first released. This version is a wonderful journey through very abstract ideas that speak volumes about how far ahead and progressive Twain really was.
