Kids love mysteries and pirates. This book is actually about a phony "head" which was a stage prop and has gone missing, threatening to end the play's run in Blackbeard's one-time home in Bath, North Carolina. This play really did take place in Bath until the late 1980's, and has been revived. Marsh's "hook" is to take pictures of real children (she used her daughter and son and newer books use her grandchildren) and use their names as characters. The company website even offers opportunities for children to try to become characters in one of her books.
The plot is somewhat simplistic and the characters are not well-developed. Typos and grammatical errors are present!! However, interesting information is given and children seem to like Marsh's books (I am a school librarian).
