This book was so short it felt more like a summary of a mystery rather than a mystery itself. In fairness, I haven't read many short stories that were mysteries so it is possible that this kind of story is not for me but that Sandra Baublitz executed it in the manner typical of the form.
Suspects were presented so rapidly that I had no idea who anyone was or what their motives were. Clarissa seems a bit unaware of her world. She found a buried red dress but the next morning comments "to be honest I had completely forgotten it." Who finds something that weird and then just forgets about it?
Everything was just too fast for my taste. About the only thing I can say good about the book is that it is a quick read and there is no useless description. It is as to the point as you can get.
I don't recommend this book to readers unless they really are looking for a bare bones mystery. I didn't enjoy it.
Of course, Paw had to get himself into trouble as soon as they arrived: he began digging in Aunt Mavis' garden and dug up a red dress. Finding the dress was strange, but Clarissa volunteered to replant the flowers. Aunt Mavis said that wasn't necessary: she loved working in the garden.
Soon after her arrival Clarissa learned about a series of burglaries that involved a woman in a red dress. Could it be the same dress Paw found?
Also - someone put a note under Clarissa's door that said Uncle Josh was murdered. Could it be true? She would have to investigate and find out. But that wasn't as safe as she had assumed it would be: someone watching her didn't want her to uncover the truth. In fact, her life might be in danger.
Would Clarissa and Paw dig out the facts in time? Would they find the answer to Uncle Josh's final mystery? Was his investigation into this mystery the real reason for his death?
I enjoyed this story. Sure, I agree with the reviews that said the characters and / or the story could have been more fully developed. However, I bought this story knowing full well it was a short story. And going through several of my short stories this morning I selected several of the shorter ones to read because I really didn't have time to spend on a 70, 90, 108, etc. page story. I wanted a SHORT short story.
Knowing you are reading a short story, and knowing how many pages are IN that story before you ever buy it or read it, why complain about it because it is short or lacks development? Of COURSE it lacks development: it is SHORT. The two more or less go hand in hand. You are not going to get the quality of a best selling, highly acclaimed novel in 15 or 20 pages. It keeps amazing me that people actually expect this and complain when it doesn't happen. Just enjoy the stories for what they DO offer: they are nice little stories for a break in the day's routine. Nothing deep (most of the time), but still fun and worth the few minutes it takes to read them.
I really enjoyed this story. Nothing Earth shattering, but still fun and something I am more than happy to recommend to you. Grab your favorite chair, settle back, and follow Clarissa as she gets to the bottom of this mystery. Who knows? You might even figure out where the Blue Dolphins (of the title) might be hidden.
