Mr. McEIhinney does a great job weaving Christian values into this story of fun and adventure. At the same time he captures the bantering back and forth between girls and guys who’re trying to outdo each other. He also explores the challenges different personalities pose as the girls learn to accept one another. However, nothing at the camp prepares the girls to deal with the mystery of the disappearing horse. The reader keeps turning the pages to see what prank the guys will play next on the girls, whether or not Katie and her friend can shore up their faith and get along with two campers so very different from them, and what’s the deal with the horse?
I recommend this fun mystery for girls and boys.
Great story-line of who dun it. And the addition of teen boys into this carousel of girlie emotions strikes the perfect balance for a very entertaining read. While not in the least preachy, he draws young readers into self-examination of who they really worship…self or God.
But what a cliff-hanger ending, Dale. How long will we have to wait on Book Two…too long I’m bettin’. It’s a toss-up which series I like best…the boys or the girls. Hmm, I need two more books in order to make that decision!
If you're looking for a great gift idea for a young person in your life, grab a copy of this book. You- and they- won't be disappointed!
This is Dale McElhinney’s second mystery book and his writing style is comfortably recognizable. Being a connoisseur of the fine use of words, I found the story a delight to read. Mr. McElhinney masterfully crafts the twists and turns of a mystery in a language perfectly suited to his adolescent audience. Is each new character you meet a villain or a friend?
Beyond being an excellent mystery, the story also serves as a parable in some sense, challenging the powerful teenage icons of physical appearance and status. Both parents and teenagers alike will enjoy and benefit from this fine first book in an anticipated series of camp mysteries.
When twelve-year-old Katie and her friend Molly arrive at summer camp, the last thing they expect is to be plagued by some teenage boys. The long for the fun of campfire stories, adventures and horseback rides. But when Katie sees a white horse running in the dark of night she names him Moonlight. Only no one seems to know where this horse is and everyone else doubts it even exists. With boys plaguing her and the vanity of some of her cabin-mates challenging her ability to love people right where they are, God seems to have a lot of work to do in Katie’s heart.
While searching for the elusive horse they encounter challenges and danger, and lessons on what it really means to live for God.
This is a high-spirited adventure for girls and boys alike, especially horse lovers! Dale McElhinney has outdone himself with this mystery to appeal anyone who loves a great mystery – regardless of age.
