There is no more interesting and fun moment in musical theater then the moment in Act II when the show grinds to a halt and the cast of this Victorian show-within-a-show announce that Dickens died before he could finish the story and write a solution to the mystery (true), so the audience will have to vote on how the show ends.
But this original soundtrack from the original production has been out of print and impossible to find for ages. It's an awesome score that has been fiddled with continuously since the show first hit theaters, but well worth your time. Rollicking Victorian art song tradition meets broadway meets pop song sensibility. How something this grand and great came out of the same guy who brought us the Pina Colada Song I do not know, but I don't need to.
"There You Are" and "Don't Quit While You're Ahead" are a rollicking good time, and the recording includes most of the possible endings. It's so great to have this soundtrack available again. I only hope that the new production runs for years and they get a recording of their own soon.
