Lady Mercy has always dreamed of becoming a physician, but a woman physician is not acceptable back in 1819 in England. She feels it is God's calling and she is determined to fulfill the passion of her heart, but her status as a woman would always prohibit such actions.
The writer created an interesting premise for the storyline with the Spear of Destiny. This relic had been passed down through the centuries. It was said that this Holy Lance could heal and also protect the country in which it lies and even empower that country to rule the world. A very powerful object, but of course this was a myth and legend. Only God possesses these miraculous powers. It was believed this was the Roman spear that pierced Christ's side after He died on the cross.
The story transpires with many twists and turns with a bundle of adventure and intrigue. Unfortunately, there was not a lot of realism and I just wasn't captivated by the storyline or the characters. i also felt the ending was rather abrupt and leaving a few loose ends to be tied up. Perhaps there will be another book in this series to put some finishing touches to the storyline. I also feel I should've read the first two books in this series - might have made a big difference in my feelings for this book. Just not a favorite.
