Very, very entertaining romp.
Better than most movies coming out these days.
The Shoveller: What are we gonna publicize Roy, that we get our butts kicked, a lot?
(...)
The Blue Raja: I'm not StabMan, I'm not KnifeyBoy, I'm the Blue Raja.
Mr. Furious: [referring to the Blue Raja's costume] Yeah, that's another thing... why are you the Blue Raja? I mean, you've got green, you've got a little flowery thing going on, but it's like everything but blue.
(...)
The Shoveller: It's a waste of money
Mr. Furious: You know who doesn't think is a waste of money? little Mr. Captain Amazing
The Shoveller: oh.. we.. capt.. (stuttering) If we had a billionaire like Lance Hunt as our benefactor...
Mr. Furious: That's because Lance Hunt *IS* Captain Amazing
The Shoveller: Don't start that *again*. Lance Hunt wears glasses. Captain Amazing *doesn't* wear glasses.
Mr. Furious: He takes them off when he transforms.
The Shoveller: That doesn't make any sense, he wouldn't be able to see...

If you found the previous pieces of dialog interesting, then this is a movie you may want to watch. This is not about being or not being intelligent as some previous reviewers suggest; actually you must have at least certain level of IQ to enjoy or at least understand comedy of the absurd. The thing is, when you go see a 'hero movie', most of the times is because you want to imagine yourself as the hero of the movie, where you are a cool guy with lots of hi-tech gadgets at your disposition and all the babes which wear bikinis (or tight dresses) all the time fell madly in love with you; this is not the case here, as you probably don't want to imagine yourself as a 40 years old guy who lives with his mother and whose power is to throw salad forks.
So, if you want to see a comedy of the absurd, and a great one at that, by all means, watch this movie; you will also find gold material in the extra features (the deleted sequence where they are in search for 'The Sphinx' is hilarious). If, on the other hand, you want to see a feel good typical hero movie, where you save the princess and at the end you say a witty sentence and everyone laughs because you are oh so clever, then you may want to check some other alternatives.
If you are interested in this movie, other movies that may interest you are:

The most amazing part of "Mystery Men" is that this original idea is carried out by the first-rate cast. Let me introduce those brave actors one by one, who are reckless to wreck their precious caree..., I mean, their neck in this joyfully off-beat action-comedy.
Hank Azaria, as the Blue Raja, whose speciality is to throw folks (and his domineering mom is Louise Lasser)
William H. Macy, as the Shoveller, who is good at using you know what (and in fact pretty good too)
Ben Stiller, as Mr. Furious, who can display his great power only when he is angry.
To add these principal heroes, you can see:
Janeane Garofalo, as the Bowler, whose deadly bowling ball contains her father's skull (don't ask)
Kel Mitchel as the Invisible Boy, who is invisible only when nobody is watching him
Paul Reubens as The Spleen, who got a very stinking gaseous weapon to use
Tom Waits as Dr. Heller, an inventor of non-lethal weapons
Wes Studi as The Sphinx, whose leadership is often hindered by his redundant advice, making a good example of tautology.
Plus, you see even Eddie Izzard and Lena Olin (but their parts are both too small). The action scenes are competently done, and the production design and special effects are both decently made. The film sometimes takes itself too seriously (making some remarks on life, no, no), but when it gets into its actions, it gives lots of fun to us.
Oh, and I almost forgot to say that lovely Clair Forlani appears, but not as the Wonderwoman or something (shame, I expected that). Instead, you can see Michael Bay (yes, THAT director) as a frat boy, and he is even given a line to say!
THE VHS SPECIAL EDITION has a 10 minute behind-the-scene footage featuring the interviews of the cast and crew. its reveals how Janeane Garofalo throws this heavy ball across a swimming pool, and it's a surprisingly simple trick. Funny.

Nowadays, when you look at the cast of ‘Mystery Men’ it almost reads like a who’s who of Hollywood. Yet, back then all the stars seemed to be faces who you kind of knew because you’d seen them before in… oh, you know… it was him out of that thing on TV. You have Ben Stiller, William H Macy, Greg Kinnear, Eddie Izzard and Geoffrey Rush to name but a few. It’s a pretty impressive ensemble, so I always wondered why it was never bigger than it seemed to be. I guess at the time people may have thought it was a superhero movie and, due to the public seemingly thinking that all superhero movies were like ‘Batman and Robin’ they stayed away, plus Ben Stiller’s star hadn’t quite peaked back then, so it couldn’t ride on his future post ‘Something About Mary’ popularity. Plus it might be difficult to market, as, on first inspection, you could be mistaken for thinking it was a ‘proper’ superhero film, i.e. complete with giant budget and epic action set-pieces. Then again, if you look closely at the silly costumes and the fact that one woman is using the skull of her father inside a ‘magic’ bowling ball as a weapon, you could be forgiven for thinking that it’s a straight comedy. However, again, it may have many funny moments, but you wouldn’t call it a ‘laugh-a-minute’ ride.
‘Mystery Men’ is one of those films that dips in and out of various genres. Personally, I’d call it a ‘satire of the superhero genre.’ Now, I enjoy both DC and Marvel’s current crops so I like to think I’m well up on the various conventions and clichés associated with the genre. Therefore, when I watch ‘Mystery Men’ I can appreciate how much work has gone into lampooning it. However, when it was released the genre it was parodying wasn’t established enough to really sell this movie. If you’re looking for something that takes a satirical, yet loving, swipe at all things superhero-related, then you should definitely check this out. Don’t expect total action. Don’t expect outright comedy. Expect a subtle blend of the two. If you’ve ever read the cult comic ‘Astro City’ you’ll know the tone of this film.
PLOT...
A group of inept amateur superheroes must try to save the day when a supervillain threatens to destroy a major superhero and the city.
From 1999 Mystery Men is a funny alternative comic-book movie with a band of unlikely heroes with random unique abilities and powers! A hilarious plot with a big villain being released from prison then killing Captain Amazing the number 1 superhero of the city and it's up to the little guys to step up and save the day, a great cast playing the characters, well-paced out with plenty humour, silly action and all done on a great budget with some cool effects and locations and sets! Certainly, worth checking out for a bit of fun with some old-school comedy cast. An alternative crazy funny original comic-book adventure.
The 88Films Blu-ray looks great in HD.
Features include commentary, trailer, and deleted scenes and several featurettes (89mins total)
Region B UK. Running time 122mins. 1999/2020.
English language movie. Subtitles English.
Comes with a nice, limited-edition slipcase and booklet.

Yes, it's completely ridiculous but that's what we all need sometimes. Grab a beverage of your choice, set aside your higher thought processes and just enjoy. Or I'll set Mr Furious on you.
