Paul Moxham – The Mystery Series Short Bk 2 – The Mystery of the Missing Gnomes – Reviewed 9/12/13
Garden Gnomes disappearing everywhere, who can it be? Another great adventure to be had…
Following on from their adventure at Brackness Castle, the Mystery Kids find themselves in another exciting mystery when gnomes start disappearing from people's gardens. Who would do such a thing? What is so important about the gnomes? What lengths will the children have to go to in order to catch the criminal? Set in 1950's Britain, this adventure story will suit anyone who enjoys Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, or the Famous Five.
What did I like? In this one, I was so heart warmed with the complete storyline. Things happen in our lives, that just turn the world upside down. I was happy that this could be written so that children could have a chance to hear that even adults have problems and that other adults can have the warmth of the heart to understand. Coping with life at any age is difficult so we need to teach our children that it is ok to hurt.
What will you like? Lots of adventure, exciting to the end of the chase, heartwarming, wonderful ending! The storyline is one of the best so far, I loved the well thought out and emotional content of the ending. One of the best teaching tools a parent has is the reading that their children do. Encouraging them to understand a storyline and how they, themselves can benefit from it is the ultimate goal. Be sure to add this one, it is remarkable!

These short stories, (currently nine), are set in 1950's Britain, and many editorial reviews and descriptions compare them favorably to the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and the Famous Five series. The comparison to the work of Enid Blyton, especially her Famous Five collection, is particularly apt.
The Moxham books strike me as more rewarding than the short stories, which shouldn't be surprising. In the books you have more characters, more red herrings, more adventures and just a bigger canvas. The short stories are nice little snacks. The kids are just sketched in because you are familiar with them. There are fewer scenes, a little less suspense, and the wrap ups are a bit more pat. But, that's the nature of the short story and it shouldn't dissuade one from scooping them up to read as samplers, (or appetizers).
Consider this story. Garden gnomes are disappearing at an alarming rate. The gang decides this is just the type of mystery they've been looking to solve. Suspects are listed and discussed. Victims are interviewed. There is skulking and lurking and even stakeouts. The perpetrator is fairly obvious and the resolution is a bit anti-climactic, but the gnomes end up safe and sound, and then we have ice cream. Super ripping? No. A nourishing feast? Perhaps not. But certainly an engaging revisit with the gang and a comfortable tour around Smugglers Cove on our bicycles.
So, I'm all set and this story can just help my imagination along. That's what I mean by calm and suggestive. I'm glad there are books and stories like these.
Please note that I found this book while browsing Amazon Kindle freebies. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

The Mystery of the Missing Gnomes (The Mystery Series Short Story Book 2) by Paul Moxham
This story starts out when the kids meet the new police sheriff and he's asking for their help in solving the mystery of the missing gnomes out of others gardens. He has more important cases to attend to I think.
Children gather their friend Will and they put the clues together-times all were committed, the locations and form a stake out the next day. Love that they meet at the ice cream store to compare notes as Will's father is a famous writer and he always has money from his father.
They put the list of suspects together and figure out which one couldn't have done it til they are playing ball in Will's back yard and he sees things in the old man's house next door that he can't believe. He tells the others and they know they have to notify the police ....
There are circumstances that only the police can handle and this one they take over and come to a decision....
Can't wait to see what trouble the kids get into next....

As a teacher, it is necessary to have interesting reads for the students. In one on one Zoom, I have used these books and the students enjoy them. The vocabulary is strong for building knowledge but not daunting. I am enjoying these reads also! Thank you Paul Moxham.

I love Paul Moxham’s books. I love all the mysteries the kids get into and solve. I have enjoyed every one and look forward to future books. They remind me of the Nancy Drew and the Happy Hollisters books. While reading these books I get lost into them and all the stress leaves me. When my nephews get a little older I want to share them.

This third story in the Mystery of Smugglers Cove series was very sweet. I even got choked up a bit at the end while trying to read it out loud to my son. It wasn't as exciting as the other books, but was a bit more realistic and delved a bit deeper into the characters. I was a little nervous that my son wouldn't like it as much, but when we finished, I looked over and asked, "Did you like it?" His response was an enthusiastic, "YEAH!"

I'm an adult, but I really enjoyed this story, along with other mysteries in the Moxham series. I was an avid reader even as a child, and loved to read mysteries like these. They remind me of books I loved to order from Scholastic Books. Every now and then, I like to revisit those days, by reading a story like this one. Why should kids have all the fun?!
