In this posthumously released Spotlight Club Mystery, Cindy, Jay, and Dexter come across the Civil War diary of Serafina Winslow, daughter of sculptor and artist Will Winslow. They also meet estranged sisters Carmen and Claudia and briefly spy a locket, which the diary claims is the key to a treasure. The hunt for the locket and the discovery of its secrets lead this trio into Blue Ridge Cemetery, the location of Serafina’s grave and many of Winslow’s sculptures. The Heides (mother and daughter) offer beginning chapter-book readers a solid mystery filled with suspects, clues, possible ghosts, red herrings, and commentary about the detective process. Escabasse’s black-and-white artwork gives the story a contemporary feel, despite certain plot points (kids making friends with strangers in a cemetery) that mark this as a story from a more innocent time. This should be popular with graduates of David A. Adler’s Cam Jansen series. Another Spotlight Club Mysteries title, Mystery of the Bewitched Bookmobile (originally published in 1975), newly illustrated by Escabasse, is being reissued. Grades 2-5. --Kay Weisman
